Clowns to the left of me. Jokers to the right.

The latest unit off the painting table is a new unit of Imperial Harquebusiers. I have experimented with trying to use those figures in the “shoot the guy next to me” pose. Read the blog post for my exploration of 17th century ride-by-shooting including Caracole - the Spanish Snail! https://theviaregia.blogspot.com/2024/05/clowns-to-left-of-me-jokers-to-right.html

Andy: great unit and extremely interesting blog article. I contemplated something similar using Captain General figures with a few rear rankers re-loading after firing, but haven't got round to it yet.

@Basementboy - thanks, really glad you enjoyed it  :)

@Paul Richardson - much appreciated - I will definitely be trying this again with different units.

I've often wondered about the caricole formation. Well often is a bit of an exaggeration but why would a man in full, or very full armour ride around in a form of circle shooting at chaps with a pistol. A piistol had a very limited acurate range, the coricole formation is going to be very immobile, it's just asking for trouble.

Interesting blog post though.
Cheers

Very glad you found it interesting @Vagabond.

The cavalry firepower thing is fascinating.  You have the move from lance to pistol.  Then, as you give horsemen more and more firearms, they (perhaps reasonably!) seek to avoid hand to hand combat and prefer to shoot at the enemy, especially if those enemy aren't shooting back.

The doctrine then moves back to melee orientated cavalry, but by 1680s it seems to have slipped back to shooting again.

I appreciate the logic that asking people to engage in melee, in which they are required to bludgeon, or be bludgeoned, to death is more difficult than to ask them to shoot firearms at a distant foe. Perhaps this has something to do with it?

That's a rather clever way of displaying that particular tactic. Top marks, would never have occurred to me. Nice looking unit btw.

Andy: the fellow who is firing, wearing a morion and green trousers. In your blog you describe him as a Warlord figure. If you remember, please could let me know which pack he comes from. He doesn't look familiar. Thanks.

I really like the look of that unit. I agree, I'd like to see more like this.

I believe he is from the Harquebusier box set: link.. (the fellow closest to us in the group photo).

Thanks, @Patrice, much appreciated 👍

Cheers, @Sepoy1857, really glad you liked it.  :D

Glad you like it, @Carlos  :D

Hi @Paul, I’m pretty sure it is the mounted drummer from Warlord Dragoons box set (https://store.warlordgames.com/products/royalist-parliamentarian-dragoons#images-2).  I put a morion on him for the whole TYW vibe, and the drum had been used for something else, so he has a jug/flask strapped to his back instead.👍

Hi @Codsticker, the figure with the floppy hat is from the Harquebusier set, as you say.  The other figure on that base I think is from the Dragoon set.  Both in that ‘special’ pose  ;D

Andy/Codsticker: many thanks. I thought I didn't recognise him from the Imperial Harquebusiers set. I've never bought the Dragoons set, which would explain why I didn't recognise him.
