Trenches for the Quar, Finale, Crated and delivered
« on: June 07, 2024, 06:26:07 PM »
My long-time buddy and taskmaster, Zhodani Commando, has asked me to build some trenches for his growing collection of Quar to fight over. Design sketches have been submitted and work has begun.

a bit crowded and complex

simplified and moved back a bit to increase center area of "no man's land"

I have to confess that I enjoy the carpentry phase a lot

Constable Bertrand, I learned the hard way about mounting terrain when I was building my 1/50 model of the Castillo de San Marcos. I mounted the model on 1/4" luan ply and found the sheet plywood warping due to the moisture in the paint ( just a few days before the gaming convention that I was presenting the model at!) A night-long frantic construction of frames brought things under control. Ever since I have mounted large projects on properly framed bases that can be linked together to prevent shifting during play. This has the additional side benefit of then being able to use the boards to create a crate so the model is protected and easier to transport.

That’s an ingenious set up for travel! I haven’t seen anything quite like it.

Good plan.
I have seen that arrangement for model railways.

Re: Trenches for the Quar, blocking-in the trenches

I got most of the layout and blocking-in done. Now I wait for the glue to dry as I build duck-boards, revetments and parapets and decide how to make the shell-holes. More here  https://antonswargame.blogspot.com/2024/06/trenches-for-quar-part-ii-blocking-in.html

A very clever approach to making the shell holes

My adaptable 1950's hot knife died so I had to improvise

I wish that I could find an adequate replacement

In this episode we clean up the craters a bit and build revetments for the trench walls:  https://antonswargame.blogspot.com/2024/06/trenches-for-quar-part-iv-tidying-up.html

Good progress - can I ask why you painted everything brown before you added the white filler to the shell holes?

Fred, I use household latex  paint on the surface both to color and toughen up the surface, usually by the time the project is finished there are at least three coats over all the surfaces. It is also a useful bonding agent for surface textures such as sand and flocking.

Makes sense - and a useful tip in this kind of construction
