Star Saga : ready to delve ?
« on: July 03, 2024, 02:49:48 PM »
Hello there !

I painted the minis from Mantic Games : Star Saga. Those are plastic miniatures for boardgames. Not the greatest ones but definitely not the worst, the sculpting is good, even if the plastic doesn't express its full potential.

I decided to apply a simple yet efficient technique : slapchop. Based in black, drybrush grey, zenithal drybrush light gray and I then lined in white the zones I really wanted to pop out. I didn't wanted to make a third drybrush. I lost time but obtained more control over the zones I wanted to draw attention on.

Second step was tu use the various Speedpaints / contrast / vallejo xpress I have to get a bunch of nice colours on those scifi folks. the only exceptions are : the white armors, the skin of the tentacle creature and the skin of the mutants (that I hard drybrushed in flesh before using diluted green speedpaint).

Third step was painting the bases. I first tried to make very bright lines on a blakc basecoat but... using mask tape wasn't convincing (and time consuming). I changed my mind and use stippling with grey, brown-red and orange to (try to) simulate old partly rusted complex floor.

Last step : finding my bases not so convincing, empty, I decided to add some details. I printed on paper some hazard and lab signs, glue them on the bases (often after bending them). The final touch was "battle damages" using blister foam with dark brown and putting light silver on the sign I considered to be metal panels. Ok, the real final touch was adding some blood with Tamya X-27 clear red...

Marines :

Security guards (and their boss) :

Lab technicians (and their boss) :

subjects that escaped :

Enforcer (I used to paint hte other ones for Deadzone in this Tron Style) :

The tentacle/telepath creature :

The Abominations (that I still haven't met in the game  :o ) :

B07153 :

Alyse the Rogue :

Captain Drulinsky the sharpshooter :

Fransesco "the devil" Selvaggio :

Wrath, the fighting Judwan :

Hogan Helkkare, the hacker renegade and his automatic turrets :

I also started to paint som of the sceneries using the same method.

Thank you for reading men I hope my english is not that bad and at least understandable. I now need to find colours ideas to finish the other furnitures...

I have the box on a shelf, still unpainted. I have done a couple of the figures but, as you noted, the plastic is not the best :-[

Well done on getting through them all, but I'm not sure seeing them all painted is enough to get me back to them :)

Wonderful paint jobs! I don't know how big the files are, but they easily took about five minutes to download. Do you edit your photos to size them for the web? Or maybe my internet was slow today?  lol

Brilliant work on these figures.

I was given a lot of them by a friend and agree they are not the best; what you've achieved is very impressive.

Mine have been chopped up and kitbashed into a multitude of projects.

I only cut to gave them a nice shape but not resizing before uploading them on Postimages. I thought that fora usually resize automatically due to responsive design ?

They look great, your slapchop did a pretty convincing job on them (this technique not always does)

Thanks !

I'll probably post pictures of my Tronforcers for Deadzone here once the bases will be done.

Good to see them painted.
I look forward to seeing some more.

I too have the box, a freebie from a TWD:AOW buyfest at Salute (which one I cannot remember and I did not mention it - possibly 2017?).

Looking good man! And note that you now also have two Deadzone factions ready for playing :). Namely the Mazon Labs and a Mercs faction, "The Eiras Contract"!

Thank you very much !

I was devastated when I saw the Eiras contract warband released in Mantic Vault just after I finished to paint the bas plastic versions... But that's how it is. And the Enforcer will be used in the other premade team for Deadzone.

I'd like to finish and take pictures of the enforcers but I first have to paint some Crim's to run iniations of Urban Manhunt first.
