ECW Regt mix
« on: June 14, 2024, 05:44:11 PM »
Hi,

I just acquired a lot of ECW Scots tons of pikemen, not so many muskets.  Is it realistic to mix equal numbers of pike to shot or ore pike than shot?

Thanks for any input,

Frank

Hi. Are you planning to model the Scottish Covenanter army that fought at Marston Moor or that which fought Montrose. Or maybe even Montrose?

Ok. That's a more complex one as you have Highlanders, "Irish" Regiments plus more conventional units. Do you plan to expand what you have and what size army do you plan?

Not sure I have over 600 figures.  Cavalry and infantry.
Many, many pike.  Archers, quite a few guys with swords.

Size?   Maybe 6bto 8 regiments of foot and 3 of cav.

Wow! What ruleset do you plan to use? I game ECW quite a lot. If you PM me your e-mail I can send you a lot more info rather than via typing into my I-Phone.

Not sure about Scottish armies specifically, but the usual rule of thumb for the ECW more generally, has been that in the early part of the war the ratio of pike to musket could have been as high as 1:1; by the middle part of the wars the usual ratio was 1:2 (two musketeers to every pikeman); and by the late war period (2nd and 3rd civil wars and Cromwellís campaigns in Scotland and Ireland), possibly as low as 1:3.
The New Model Army theoretically maintained a ratio of one pikeman to two musketeers, but thereís some doubt as to how well this was achieved in practice. Many of the later period battles were sieges, mopping up operations, and small scale actions. Pikemen would have been of limited utility in these sorts of encounters.

In any event, if you have a much higher proportion of pikes to shot, thatís probably not too representative of the way it was - although as I say, I donít know much about Scots armies in this period.
I guess itís possible that with their history of long-spear armed schiltrons throughout the medieval and Renaissance eras, the Scottish held onto massed pike blocks longer than English and Welsh armies of the mid C17th. But thatís just speculation on my part :)
