15mm Space Station Zero and 5PFH
« on: June 20, 2024, 10:12:53 AM »
Last year I started on a project to play Space Station Zero using 15mm scifi figures. Although I have a bunch of sci-fi already in 28mm I was looking for something smaller and more portable, and in 28mm I still needed a lot of figures. Space Station Zero is a solo/coop game set in the interior of a large derelict ship with around 20 scenarios as part of a campaign, and is published by Snarling Badger games

I ordered some figures from Alternative armies as well as GZG including crews, mutants, robots and plants. I forgot to photo the AA figures before painting them, so here is the GZG figures (mostly robots). I could have used the same robot figures for all the different types in the game but I wanted each type represented with different figures.

I was planning to make a box for the board which is 22x30 inches but I am converting all measures to cm for 15mm. I found this storage box which is slightly bigger, and it gives me space to add details to interior walls. I'll knock out the center pieces and create an insert to make the floor level when it is fully expanded.

Also I have some 28mm sci-fi scatter terrain I made which I have started converting to 15mm. I made too much 28mm terrain so its good to repurpose some to 15mm.

Cheers

I'll be interested to see how this project goes. I have purchased Space Station Zero, but have yet to start playing it, so any comments on the rules will be interesting as well.

Likewise! Keen to see how you tackle the board, and ready to pilfer your ideas for terrain

Dude, you just described what's on my table...

But it's been slow going on the Terrain. Well and the distraction of Bug Hunt in the 5PH Compendium.

Thanks guys, I'm very motivated to get started playing this game.

I scratch built some gun turrets for one of the scenarios in SSZ. The scenario requires 2 but if I play co-op then I need 4 (I think) so I thought why not! The base is a 28mm Dungeon and lasers sci fi part with a couple of 20mm slotta bases on top and Iliad Studio radar part IIRC. I added some spare 28mm scifi gun barrels and finger nail greebles to finish it off.

Also is one of my Alternative Armies crew and this guy is a spaceship pilot.

Here's the first figures I painted - some crew for SSZ. They are all Alternative Armies figures and from their various 15mm sci-fi and Ion Age ranges.

Spaceship pilot

Technician

Octopod Medic - not the greatest sculpt and pretty blobby

Adventurer

Bearded Mercenary

I'm not super happy with them and I think its due to the layering being too subtle and the varnish dulling the colours. I'll adjust my painting style as I pretty much painted them with the same techniques I use for  28mm figures but they don't have the same surface area. I'll go for stronger contrasts between colours and layers.

Interesting, these are also the two Sci-Fi skirmish games I've been ruminating on (not counting bigger battle Xenos Rampant). I did get in one co-op game of Space Station Zero awhile back. Here's the battle report:
https://leadlegionaries.blogspot.com/2023/01/first-game-of-space-station-zero.html

I enjoyed it, but despaired of porting it over to my Sunday night game crew where we average 6-7 players per evening. I thought maybe to make it competitive and run two boards side by side, but that would have meant more reworking what I'd done so far. I think the system is solid. I have heard that some missions are dang tough. The fact that you can't make up losses seems to me to limit the campaign. Since you're a space ship docked, why not replace lost crew with guys still back on the ship? I realize it is a game balance thing, too. However, I'm sure a little tweaking would fix that.

As for Five Parsecs, I am looking forward to trying that in the next month or so as a straight up solo game. I pretty much never play solo, but figured what the heck? Give it a try...looks interesting.

Good luck on your games. If you want more on my prep, you can just read through all blog entries tagged with Space Station Zero:

I took the flying part of a 25mm figure that was supposed to have a rider and modified that. It turned out okay, and would look good in either 15's or 28's, I think.

If you'd like to check out how I made them and the original figure, here's my blog post about it:

Good luck!

Strange I'm not getting any notifications of replies to this thread, sorry about that!

Here's what I made for swarm bots. I had some large drawing pins and I added MDF disks to the bottom and various pieces of wire/pins.and some small bits of nail art like the dome and brass pieces. Also there is a shoulder pad from a 28mm figure.

I love the little pin head guys...!  :D lol

I did something similar using wooden craft pieces from the hobby store and extra weapons and such (for the melee bots).

I can't wait to see your reports from your games...!
