FNN's WWII in 28mm - Americans for North Africa
« Reply #16 on: January 01, 2025, 04:37:55 PM »
Santa brought a set of US Infantry by Perry - long awaited! I was wondering what kind of jacket this guy's wearing - it's not a Parsons, as those have lapels, it's not just the wool shirt since they have breast pockets, and it's not the tankers jacket because these have zippers. There's at least a couple bodies with this jacket on each sprue. Is it some sort of officers' uniform?!

Some painted minis will (hopefully) soon follow!

It's a 41 Parsons jacket.  It just has the lapel closed and buttoned.  When worn that way, it looks like a regular collared jacket.  I checked mine (from my reenacting days), just to make sure I remembered that correctly.  It wasn't worn that way a lot, but some guys did wear it that way, circumstances and weather depending...

The houses have turned out well  8)

Yes, the Perry Afrika Korps and Desert Rats are ‘true’ 1/56 scale, so much smaller than the more caricatured large 28mm figures by Warlord. And the relief is quite subtle, so they’re not the easiest to paint. But they do come up nicely, look very realistic, and have beautiful character, so I prefer them. You’ve done a good job on them :)

Keep meaning to pick up the US infantry too, but still haven’t got round to it. Interested to know how you think they compare against the German and British sets. My sense was they might be a little bit bigger?

I fully expected Michael P to take this plastic range out into a full WW2 range mirroring all the Airfix sets of old. But 10 years on, and it seems the Western Desert is all we’re getting ;)

Thanks a lot! High praise coming from you, I love your Perry desert stuff  :D

I'm on holiday right now, once I get back home to my Germans I'll gladly snap a picture or two if I remember to do so.

Yeah, it's a shame they haven't gotten around to doing any other theatres, or, even staying in the North Africa/Italy campaign, some plastic Italians, or plastic Fallschirmjäger! Then again, the Americans released what, 6 years after the rest? So there's hope  :'(

First few Americans are done! (except for insignia :P)
I'm really happy with how they came out.

I was looking at some plastic palm trees and some fleece blankets to get from Amazon, for terrain, or maybe making some hills out of XPS. That's the next step, I reckon (or building and painting some more GIs, maybe fill out a full strength squad).

Included are some size comparisons with the Germans. Unfortunately the Americans do seem to be a bit larger technically, although it's really not noticeable. Keep in mind my phone camera might be distorting things somewhat.

I wouldn’t be too worried about the very slight difference in height, on the table, you won’t notice at all.  They look very nice.

Oh yeah it's really not noticeable on the table, or even on the shelf unless you really look at them (from eye level, even). I just thought I'd mention it nonetheless since Cpt Blood asked how I think they compare.

Thanks!

Lovely work on those G.I.'s. Did you use contrast paint on those?

Thanks a lot! Nah, just regular old acrylics (mainly Vallejo, some GW, AP sepia wash). I can of course share the recipe if anyone's interested.

I basecoated the jackets with VMC German Camo Beige or Khaki*, pants with US Field Drab (brown) or US Dark Green (green), helmets with US Olive Drab, guns and boots with Citadel Mournfang Brown (and VMC Flat Black for the guns), gaiters with German Camo Beige, webbing with VMC Iraqi Sand and skin with VMC Beige Red**.

Then, I washed the jackets and webbing with AP Sepia Tone, skin with Citadel Reikland Fleshshade, and everything else with Citadel Agrax Earthshade.

The highlights were done by rebasing most of the area in the basecoat colour, then mixing it with AK Ice Yellow*** and painting on some smaller, rough highlights (except for the skin, which was done by mixing Beige Red and Citadel Kislev Flesh). I didn't add highlights on the gaiters to keep them more subdued and a bit different to the jackets, I only re-basecoated them.

The base was painted VMC Green Ochre and lightly drybrushed with VMC Dark Sand.

Lastly I stuck on some GSW 6mm Dry Brown grass tufts, and I went over the guns with a 4B pencil, sort of like edge highlighting them. I really like the subtle shine this gives to the steel.

*I used Khaki to add some variety, but in practice it's almost indistinguishable from German Camo Beige, both on the palette and on the troops. It's a tiny bit darker and more green. It's the 3rd and 4th guy in the group pictures of the GIs that are painted in Khaki, but you really can't tell the difference.

**I used to use Citadel Cadian Fleshtone, but it dried in the pot. I bought Beige Red for being the closest match from Vallejo. They look almost identical, but the latter covers far, far worse.

***I normally use VMC Deck Tan for this, but I thought I might give Ice Yellow a try. It really doesn't make much of a difference, the mixed colours end up ever-so-slightly more yellow and a touch less faded, I think. I thought this would look good on the Americans, to both differentiate them from the Germans, but also since they'd spent less time in the field, the uniforms would be less faded. I don't think it shows in practice but that was my thought process. I hear VMC Ivory also works great as an off-white highlight mixer.
