Star Wars child board?
« on: July 29, 2024, 05:09:20 PM »
Have no idea if this subject has come up before so if it has and been 'voted' down, feel free to delete.  But curious if others would like to see a Star Wars dedicated Child Board here on LAF?

And hope this doesn't open a can of worms where everybody is clamoring for their own favorite period to have one!!!!  :o

The power of one vote, the power of two votes, the power of many votes  o_o

Yeah, it could be nice to collect it all in one place

It sounds logical, but a quick scan of the top 135 threads in the Scifi forum shows the following:

Threads    Topics
19            40K
12            Star Wars
6              Rogue Trader
5              Battletech
4              Dune
2              Dr Who

And there are some others that popped up regularly too, such as Star Trek, Aliens and the Quar, but I didn't count those (it's a slow day at work, but not that slow ;) ).

So going with the above results, it seems the first universe to get its own sub-forum should be 40K (and related topics; I included Epic threads here as well, but left out the specifically Rogue Trader ones).

While I would not be categorically against such a subdivision, I personally feel that it would do several things which might be undesirable:

1) Threads/Posts would get less views and comments, since there would be fewer people finding the content
2) It would isolate/bubble certain topics even more, preventing cross-polination and influx of different ideas

I for one really like the diversity of topics in each general forum; it often gives me ideas and exposes me to subjects I would not seek out otherwise, or even know about. And to me, that's a good thing.

Previously, we had sub-forums created because certain topics would innundate/flood the general forums, to the detriment of threads with different topics. For instance, the Frostgrave sub-forum over in Fantasy, which was necessary at the time the game came out because every other thread was a Frostgrave one. (although traffic there has slowed down considerably since then; just saying). But this is clearly not the case with Star Wars related threads.

So, all things considered I wouldn't make this a hill to die on but I would probably prefer things to remain the way they are now, especially considering the bit of inventory I did just now :)

Although I generally do not support "child boards", I would make an exception for Star Wars (as long as it is DISNEY Star Wars).
Hide it somewhere nice and dark and forgotten, Out of sight out of mind.

Daeothar makes some really good points... the balance (in the Force) feels about right currently.

The power of one vote, the power of two votes, the power of many

I'd have to vote No purely on the basis of that post  lol

I would say no, purely due to the general fall in the level of traffic on laf.

I'd also suggest that the small scale sci fi skirmish childboard be rolled back into the main board as it gets very little attention.

Agreed, if that is possible. It seems posting there relegates you to fewer views. So, why would you do it?  ???

I’d say no. I’ve no great interest in Star Wars - but don’t see that many topics that I feel it needs its own board.

Agreed - I see what was being aimed for but it didn't really take off, and no other period board has specific child boards based on game size.

As others have said, probably best to keep it all together?

Once stuff gets sorted to a child board, I often forget to visit it  ;D

Meanwhile I only come here for Star Wars related material. So I'm all on for a separate board.

While I get the arguments against such a child board, I am another who only visits the Future Wars board for Star Wars.  But I will live with whatever the collective decides.

I have noticed the rather dramatic reduction in activity here on LAF.  Can anyone point to any primary reasons?  Have people migrated to some other forum?  Been wondering about this for a while now.

There is still a pretty hardy hard core group still keeping things moving.

I suspect Facebook is eating the forum (has been for years).
