Miniature Paints (MP)
« on: August 04, 2024, 04:49:28 PM »
Has anyone had any experience of this brand?

Saw some of these available at Claymore yesterday and wondered what the quality was like? They're much cheaper than some of the better-known brands.

I’ve used some of the colours for a lot of years now and I think they’re good.

Mainly for detailed parts of terrain. I have used them on figures with no ill effects.
cheers

I use them.

Thinner, more watery than many other brands, very bright colours, just won't cover in one layer.  That suits me fine though as it works well with my style.  I also mix them with other brands with no issue.

Only found them recently.  As stated above they will need a couple of coats for full coverage but I prefer them to some of the other brands.

I backed the re-release kickstarter and have picked up several repeat orders since then. They are a pale imitation of the original glass bottle MP range (which was superb) but are on a par with most of the current alternatives. The pigments are finely ground so the paints are not gritty at all but IMHO are over dilute in the medium.
Coverage on the reds, light greens and yellows is poor, being very streaky on a white undercoat and invisible on black. The black and dark grey, all the blues and the darker greens are good. The primers have very good adhesion to metal and resin figures (and like the old GW "smelly primer" can be used to produce excellent dead matt pastel tones).
The matt varnish is not fully matt, but more so than Vallejo or GW.

Overall you have to adapt your painting style to suit them but at the price they are good value.

Well that passed me by! I still have some of the old glass bottles paints which are all 10+ years old and I love them! I didn't realise they had been re-released.

Yeah, it was about five years ago. Ral Partha Europe ran the KS, I believe. I was interested at the time but forgot all about them until I saw the range at the show last Saturday.

I think I will give them a miss based on what I have read thus far and stick with what I know and am familiar with.

I have alot of the ones in glass jars and I love them - just very basic high quality paints, not too thick, not too thin.

This whole table is done using them. Definitely worth using. They're not the only brands I use. But they do have a place amongst them. Primarily The Earth brown . Even though I know I can buy them on line. I do go out of my way to have a list of colours to buy at Shows
Rather than any other brand.Im
I do use them on figures as well as vehicles and buildings as the majority of the colours take the abuse of diluting into washes quite well .The wings on the Griffin were done with khaki ,Earth brown ,Black, coffee, and leather brown.
The fanatics were Coffee,Cream,and white.
So they can be quite versatile although I've not tried their metallic golds for over a decade as the ones I had were naff. But that was an old formula.
