Curse of the Mummy's Tomb and other painted miniatures
« on: August 04, 2024, 06:04:25 PM »
Painted some years ago as part of a project that I've long since lost interest in. Not really any kind of red thread with them, I just wanted to combine gothic horror, cosmic horror, pulp and creatures of mythology and folklore into one merry mix of miniatures.
Wasn't sure which board these would fit the best (maybe I should have separated them as pulp and gothic horror?)

Anyways, without further ado:

Curse of the Mummy's Tomb miniatures:

Adventurers, bedouins and gangsters:

Investigator types:

From hobos and hillbillies to priests and wealthy:

Wicked witch and various monsters (satyr is just happy to be here):

Great stuff, I had many of them back in the day  :)

Very nice work!

The flimsy pyramid structure that game depended on was awful. I tried to get Warbases to make me an MDF one, which sadly broke in transit. I see somebody here has made a 3D printable one:

Very tempting to revisit...

Tell me about it! Mine is barely holding on with some tape and I'm afraid next time I start to pack the game up again it gets broken beyond repair. All that fiddling with folding pieces of paper-thin cardboard in place and taking them off again without ripping the structure is nerve-wracking and makes me feel like a surgeon. At some point I'm going to have to look for alternative pyramid as well.

Those figures take me back. I still have some in the lead mountain. I hope that when I finally get round to painting them that I can do even a fraction of as good a job as you have. Well done.

Ooh, that 3D board replacement for the original game looks good, pity there wasn't anything like that around way back when.

Thanks LordBrentlake, robh, Chairface and Cat!

I like hieroglyphs of the original pyramid too much to consider any option that doesn't have them. :D

Not sure if it's because of my lacking photographing skills, ancient camera or Flickr having rescaled my photos smaller (they are not shown at original size even if you open them in new tab) and made them less sharp in the process, but I'm not exactly happy with the pictures.
Still, good to know they suffice. :)

If someone was wondering where the cosmic horror is in all this... well, I never got that far. Except kind of with the witch; I thought she looked pretty perfect as Keziah Mason from Lovecraft's short story 'The Dreams in the Witch House'.
I had earlier taken photo of her separately to ask help with identifying the miniature as I was completely stumped; she was part of a job lot of minis from various manufacturers and previous owner had cut off the puddle base. Sculpting style seemed familiar however, and after some digging at lostminiswiki I found out she was from Metal Magic c.1990.

Since I already took that photo might as well share it:

Lovely work on these, and quite timely for me as I've just scored a near mint copy of Curse of the Mummys Tomb and was also concerned about the fragility of the pyramid.

The 3d one looks great, but not ideal since I don't have a printer. I don't suppose they are available commercially anywhere?
And also, shouldn't the top be flatter to let a mini stand on it?

Anyway, sorry, bit OT there, very nice pieces, a great reference for when I get round to mine in 15 years or so...

Thanks, JollyBob. Would love to see your take on them some day, hopefully sooner than 15 years from now. :D

It's a fun little game to play every now and then. I'm trying to complete the set with additional characters introduced in WD 102. Mycroft Lestrade is waiting to get painted which leaves me missing only one miniature that I haven't been able to find at decent price; Chai Sen Fong. If whoever is reading this has one to sell or trade, drop me a PM. ;)
