I always quite wanted this but would it be playable without the miniatures?

Presumably you'd need to source a couple of hundred look-a-likes from somewhere, unless it comes with cardboard tokens for the minis?

You'd need to use proxies or make card standees which probably wouldn't be too difficult for someone to do. Even tokens would do.

The scenarios rarely have more than a dozen or so baddies and 4 heroes.
