Hercules Dropship from the Past!
« on: August 27, 2024, 01:13:48 AM »
I hope I did this right as far as attachments go. But here we go.

This has been a long time ago and I have been trying to figure out how I can get this out there. This is not mine, so I have no claims to these attachments. So, enjoy!

Oh, I remember this one! 8)

I believe the maker also did the Chickenhawk dropship, which I've made (and used) several of over the years. Really great models, all.

He had all of them available on his website, but he has moved his archives to a new one in the meantime. They can be found at Genetmodels.com now :)

However, the Hercules is not in the archives...

+++EDIT+++ And here's a link to the Chickenhawk page; it was 'adopted' by Corvus Belli for their Infinity game. For a while the CB site even linked to the design, but it's since been relegated to a specific site: Toposolitario.com :)

Well - there's a fing. used the chicken and others a number of times over the years, I don't remember this one though, still brings back memories, and still have several armed vehicles in the cupboard, as generic military for usage there of.

Great useful models, don't get enough mentions. :)

Nice spot Daeothar, now I need to stop looking at them and get back to work!

There was an alt design out there as well. Be good to find those files and pics.

I remember seeing a great pic with mechs disembarking from it.
The chickenhawk was available as a 3d model als(o Antenocities ? ) if I remember correctly. It is also available on cults 3d ( Topo Solitario )

Could this perhaps be used in 28mm scale, by putting a power-armour trooper in each of those mech bays?

Or put models like the seated or standing Fkmsa battle droids from Papsikels. I have had plans to do something similar for some time. The seated ones are great because they have a seperate charging cradle. These..

Like I said I have been sitting on this trying to figure out to get it up on here for some time. I haven't made it myself, however I want to make it for 15mm by keeping it at the same scale as it is but use it like some sort of Firefly just in a different universe. I keep bouncing back and forth as to using the last two doors towards the back for cargo holds or the two middle doors.
The scope of play is, it's a decommissioned military utility dropship, like how we used the Huey's in Vietnam. They were used in force to jump into hyperspace and drop out of hyperspace and make assault landings, hit the ground troops and equipment pour out and off they go again to get more troops and equipment while also bringing the wounded back.
these ships were heavily armed when decommissioned the armaments were striped. Not saying one couldn't find such weapons on the black market and reinstall them.
They had two upper turrets and a bottom swivel nose gun, along with two side mounted cannons, they would sort of nose-dive in using their weaponry has they were coming into their landing zones. There were gunship versions of this model. Along with the standard weapons they had rocket pods that tucked in under the wings the two side doors had swivel chain cannons operated from the forward section of the lower hull and the rear section was ammo storage. they could hover over the other ships and just slowly turn pretty much wiping out most everything outside of the drop zone. just the impact of those chain cannons stirred up so much smoke and dust that it made it very hard for the enemy to see what was being dropped off in the drop zones and with these gunships hitting false drop-zone it only made it harder as to which were the actual landing drop-zone.
There were air assault ships as well these had four doors on each side and these were used by Air Borne troopers the used Grav Belts to make it to the ground the ships would bust through the atmosphere come in nose diving blasting away then pull up to level as the side doors open and Air Borne troopers would come pouring out by the dozens. this tactic was used when things like spaceports were needed to be captured, allowing large troop transports to come in.
In the case of my crew, they acquired one got her fixed up enough to fly and managed to get an upper turret in the area back behind the bridge where the original weapon was mounded.

Sounds like a plan :)

Small cargo/carrier vessels are a staple of (not very hard) scifi, so I'd say go for it!

What would really sell the after market installation of the dorsal gun, would be to have it, and its mount, in a different colour than the rest of the ship. So the ship in grey but the gun turret in olive green for instance...

Using different colored weapon system would be a great idea. Different colored ship of the time would be that of different units, as well as nose art.
