Gluing After Painting

Any tips for gluing figures together after painting - y'know, shields on at the end and such? I use gorilla glue and I find it often leaves a white hazy coating on unpainted figures (though I know it's often because I've used too much). Are there any good ways to prevent the superglue in any way messing with the paintwork?

I take it you do remove the paint on the surfaces that require glueing? This ensures that the parts stick to eachother and not the paint; makes for a much better bond. Also; this might prevent the glue from running and fogging up the paintjob.

Make sure the surfaces to be glued have been roughed up to increase the surface area and give the glue something to grab. I tend to score a fine grid pattern across those surfaces with an X-acto knife before glueing.

Oh; and don't use too much glue; when you feel you've put on enough, you've already used too much

Activator will help prevent frosting but don't use the spray as it gets everywhere and is rather noxious. Use either a pipette or a cocktail stick although the cocktail stick takes a bit of practice.

Thanks chaps. Good tips there. It's mostly going to be with plastic figures and plastic shields so I wonder if I will get away without scraping off the paint where the glue joins? I'm sure as always I'm overcomplicating it all!

I'd still scrape to be honest as you can't be sure how the bond between raw material, primer and then paint will be. Doesn't have to be the whole area of course, just a small patch for the glue to bond.

If you are going to do this with plastic and you are going to scrape the area to be glued back to the bare material (a suggestion I concur with) then why not use a glue designed for plastics? As these meltthe surface slighty they effectively weld the parts and give a much stronger bond than a superglue will. Superglue is great for metals but the bond can be quite brittle when dropped or mishandled.

Very fair point, if I'm scraping off the paint may as well use the plastic glue!
