Asgard compatible wolf riders?
« on: September 07, 2024, 04:40:05 PM »
Looking for a bit more variety to my collection of Asgard miniatures

There's a limited variety in the wolf riders so I'm wondering if there is anything out there that might fit in with them

I'm thinking Grenadier or maybe Chronicle  might work?

If anyone has any they could show or any alternatives please let me know

I’ve got both - I’ll try and remember to post some photos tomorrow.

I think the old Rieder Design wolf riders (OH5 and OH7), also from Alternative Armies, are a decent match for the Asgard stuff. I don't have any of the Rieder wolf riders, but I have some of the orc infantry, and they mix in well with the Asgard orcs.

From what I can see, both wolves and riders are a similar size to their Asgard equivalents. You might even be able to mix and match riders and mounts across the two ranges.

The Chronicle and Grenadier wolf riders are much bigger - especially the wolves, but the riders too in the latter case. So the riders are sitting much higher up, and they're very different in style.

I chanced across the Asgard wolf riders I have last night and compared them with some Grenadier and Chronicle ones. That confirmed my initial view that they don't work too well together - at least if you want a reasonable degree of similarity in height, etc.

One thing that I'd forgotten is that the Asgard wolves are very front-heavy, with great big heads. So the wolves themselves don't actually look too out of place with the Nick Lund ones from the front. But they're much more delicate from the shoulders back and they are significantly lower-slung. When the riders are added, the combination of low-slung wolf and hunched riders makes them very different from the Lund ones.

As it happens, I've just ordered some Irregular orc wolf-riders. I suspect the riders will be bigger than the Asgard ones, but Irregular also does goblins on (I think) the same wolves. I'll report back when the order arrives!

I think the former Rieder ones from AA would be a better bet (from what I can see, they're roughly the same size, albeit with smaller heads - though that's just a guess based on the size of the Rieder orc infantry).

It might be worth digging out one of the threads on the Fantasy board in which people looked for alternative mounts for Oathmark wolf riders. The Oathmark wolves are even bigger than the Grenadier ones, but most of the alternatives people came up with were significantly smaller.

Only thought I have is to look at the Scotia Grendel orcs and see if any could give you a body to go on the legs from your current selection?
A lot of work though...

The Irregular wolves (from their orc wolf riders - the goblins have the same mounts, I think) are a pretty good match, size wise, for the Asgard ones: certainly the best I've seen so far. By that, I mean that the backs are the same height, so that riders of the same size would be sitting at the same level.

The Irregular figures are much cruder than the Asgard ones, but I think they're be a reasonable bet for adding a bit of variety. There seem to be two wolf types: head down and head up (with harness variants too, I think). For me, "head down" is the nicer figure. You can fit Asgard riders onto Irregular wolves without too much trouble.

I would look at Rieder/Alternative Armies too: the Rieder orcs (e.g. "Cro's goblin raiders") work quite well with the Asgard ones (same sort of stature in many cases and some similar hunched body positions), so the wolves and riders might well be quite interchangeable.

One more suggestion: the Essex goblin wolf riders. There are only three, and they're single-piece castings, but the wolves' backs are exactly the same height as the Asgard ones. The Essex wolves are much weedier (and the riders slightly bigger), but you could easily bulk them out with bigger green-stuff 'manes' to make them better matches. I'd happily use them together as is - especially if you're painting them all the same way.

For me, the key to mixing cavalry is having the spines of the mounts at around the same height. Everything else is secondary to that, I think.
