I got most of my livestock from Gripping Beast. Their horses are horrible, but the rest are pretty good. http://www.grippingbeast.com/shop.php?CatID=23 they do sheep and pigs, but I do not see any goats. I could swear my chickens and ducks also came from them, but I don't see them listed.

Not to bad. But it is a pity you get a bag of 10 all in the same pose.
I think they are sculpted by Bob Olley you kow (useless fact 73)

With apologies for the necromancy but this has proved a most useful thread, as I too need goats albeit for my  F&IW colonial settlement.

As I'm having a go at a bit of sculpting at the mo I thought I'd try and produce my own small herd.  One thing I'm stuck on is the type of goat.  For example:

Does anyone have a view on which might be the most representative for 18thC north east America?

From a wiki site:

Quote
The history of goats in North America began with the arrival of Spanish explorers and settlers in the 1500s. English settlers brought a few goats to New England beginning in the 1600s. These two types accounted for most of the goats found in North America until the time of the Civil War. These goats had little market value and were never recognized as distinct breeds.

And then looking at the historical European images here

http://www.georgeglazer.com/archives/prints/animals/alessandri.html

kinda suggests top left to me, but with horns.

Thoughts, please, anyone?

I buy bags of cheap plastic farm animals at the dollar store. They clean up easily with an X-acto knife & look fine after an undercoat of primer and a good paint job. Usually get plenty of goats along with sheep, chickens, pigs, and cows.

That's a great tip Herby but despite many (and sometimes arduous!) searches through £1 stores and toy shops in the UK, I have yet to find anything that will scale right.   :'(

Have you got any pics Herby F?

Some interesting farm animals here:

http://www.diorama-dreamland.at/nikolai/index.htm

they are 1/72 in scale made of resin.
They are very beautiful, maybe small, but worth looking at.

That website is an inspiration - lovely images.  Personally, having previously looked at 00 scale (Hornby) farm animals I think 1/72 would be too small for me.  Thanks for flagging the site tho.  :)
