15mm scale dark age/ fantasy hand weapons?
« on: September 20, 2024, 10:40:18 AM »
Picked up some waglif miniatures recently and realised I don't have anything suitable in this scale.

Wondering if anyone supplies anything suitable.

Looking for spears, and would appreciate suggestions on diameter to fit the scale

Also looking for swords, axes, bows and crossbows

Any additional scaled equipment such as scabbard, pocket and packs would be cool too

While I have a bunch of 15 mm weapons that are approrpriate, I'm afraid I don't recall where they came from - posted here on LAF a few months back a photo of a couple of metal sprues hoping someone could identify source but never saw a reply (maybe by now, haven't checked again after checking for a couple of weeks).  So, they may be out there though I suspect they came with figures rather than by themselves.

Can't comment on size since I'm using mine, all of them, to enhance scatter terrain rather than adding to figures.

One 'hack' I am using for my jousting knights is to replace the too flimsy lances that come with the figures with some rather large sewing needles - will cut off the eyes and dull the sharper ends.  Won't be a perfect replacement but a lot better than comically curved lances.  I can find the packs with the needles later and provide the proper name for them - a bit out of the ordinary, a lucky find at a craft store's fabric supplies section.

I think I will use the flimsy lances, by gluing them to craft sticks to keep them straight, as either some sort of game marker - or maybe even use them as movement sticks.

Thanks for that link, Cat, might prove useful.

And here are a couple of photos of those needles I spoke of, "Doll Needles":

Needed 24, come in packs of 5, so I bought 25 needles to convert.

Closer shot to see the name, the needle, and the SKU if desired.

Here is the link to weapons I posted a while back: https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=146155.msg1868888#msg1868888

Thanks, a bit pricey and the lack of pictures doesn't help my indecision

According to the website, the man himself stocks suitable spears in packs of 40.

Have a look at Donnington Miniatures, new era, equipment. Should supply all your needs - spears, axes, swords, crossbows.

Generally two types of pike/spear leaf and pin point. Think Donnington stock both.

Wire spears/pikes that are generally available are about 1mm diameter. I have seen thinner gauge wire used for commercially available spears/pikes which were a better 'look' for 15mm and 10mm figures. Can't remember who stocked them I'm afraid. Have a nagging feeling it might have been Arcane Scenery, who have unfortunately just shut up shop.

I have re-speared 15mm figures with wire in the past, but these days I prefer using black or brown nylon broom-straws. I just squish the head with a pair of flat-faced pliers and trim the resulting blob into a spearhead shape. The advantage of the brown ones is they don't even need much in the way of painting, and the flexible shafts survive ham-fistedness better as well as being less perilous to the user.

These are some old early medieval spearman I rearmed with wire — a lot of work. But they do look a lot better when done.

That's some good advice, by coincidence I use broom draws for arrows on my 28mm figures
