Raedwald’s Fantasy Thread (p.1 Wardancer)
« on: September 20, 2024, 08:27:46 PM »
Hi all,

After many years of mainly focusing on Sci Fi, the fantasy bug has got a grip of me again… it always starts the same way: re-reading the Andy Chambers Skaven article in White Dwarf 137!

Last year I enjoyed dabbling in Frostgrave for the first time:

And this year I’ve spent a lot of time prepping goblins, ready to pursue my Chamber’s inspired Night Goblin army:

However, most recently I’ve discovered The Woods, by Oakbound Studios, and have drawn on the lead pile to put together a warband for use with this folklore fantasy skirmish game.

My warband will be classic wood elves, mainly Jes Goodwin sculpts, and the first to be finished is this chap:

@Minus - Thanks, I’ve always been drawn to the grimdark side of the hobby. Back in ‘90s my friends and I tried to bring some of that atmosphere into the narratives around our games, but our painting remained pretty unimaginative and usually mirrored the ‘red period’ stuff in White Dwarf at that time.

Over the last few years, seeing things like Gardens of Hecate, Iron Sleet, and 28 Magazine has been an increasing influence and inspiration. Cheers.

Great work.  8)

I love those old wardancers, there was something very special about the almost feral, celtic/native American vibe to them that the later figures completely missed.

Your painting really suits the figure, a bit grungy and definitely not "red period"!

I had that model once upon a time... converted it to an Eldar Harlequin if I recall. You did a great jb on it!
