The Battle of Reichenberg in 10mm
« on: September 30, 2024, 05:11:58 PM »
I played Reichenberg using the Twilight of the Soldier Kings rules. It was my 3rd time playing the scenario with those rules - my pal and I made numerous mistakes the first two times through.

The Prussians advanced rapidly in the centre to attack the ridge. Artillery fire didn’t slow their advance much, but close range shots ravaged a unit of musketeers and saw them off.

The Austrian musketeers were also effective, breaking the first Prussian brigade to assault the defenses. (My opponent had some poor luck early on and failed a couple of crucial morale tests - the Prussians had to work hard through the rest of the game to try and come back from the deficit.)

It didn’t all go the Austrians’ way in the battle for the heights, though. The Prussian artillery unlimbered close by and when they got into action they shot the small Austrian Grenadier brigade into ruin.

Then Prussian musketeers at the other end of the defenses defeated their Austrian counterparts in a musketry duel and saw them off.

The Austrian and Prussian cavalry contested the ground between the heights and the wood, resulting in a draw. At the end of the game the Austrian reinforcements arrived and the Prussians didn’t quite have enough depth to force the Austrian army morale to break. The blue-coated northerners called it a day and limped off to plot their revenge.

The final pic shows the battlefield just before Prussian morale broke.

Very nice. How long did your game take? And how many turns?
And the glorious general led the advance
With a glorious swish of his sword and his lance
And a glorious clank of his tin-plated pants. - Dr. Seuss

Thanks! I’m not sure about the turns, we lost count early on as both forces made lucky reinforcements rolls and we didn’t have to track it for a die roll modifier.

The game itself went fairly quickly, especially once we played a couple turns and re-familiarized ourselves with the rules - about 4 hours altogether (plus coffee breaks and supper part way through). It could have taken longer if the Austrian artillery’s bombardment was more effective at causing delays as the Prussians closed, but that wasn’t the case this time - the blue coated devils closed to contact briskly!

We’re scheming about trying a bigger battle next time, but that will require more painting first!
