Old school DnD a project on a slow burner...
« on: October 01, 2024, 08:44:40 PM »
Couldn't resist picking a pack of these old school minis up
Not sure where this project will go as I don't have anything in this scale andI'm not sure what might fit with them

I'm wondering if 1/72 plastics might work?
.

Are they ‘old school 25mm’, like the early ‘80s Grenadier figs or original Ral Partha figs?

If so, they might be about right for height, but I think they will be noticeably stockier than 1:72 plastics (for example). They might go well with some of the Nolzur’s D&D figures, especially the monsters.

Yes the are a couple of Ral Patha figures designed by Julie Guthrie

I know she also worked for Grenadier so that's an option

They are 25mm from base to top of head

I'm mainly looking for adversaries but also some suitable dwarves - I'm thinking Asgard might fit ok

I think quite a few of the true 25mm Grenadier figures are now available from Mirliton Miniatures. They’re in a “classic fantasy” section (rather than the listings for the bulkier Fantasy Armies figures). A lot of monsters are available there.

The old true 25mm Ral Partha figures have been re-released under the Ral Partha Legacy label.

 https://ralparthalegacy.com/

The prices are higher than I am willing to pay, though, and I expect that postage from the US would be expensive. Still, they’re available if there are some old figures you just need to have!

I've got a very similar slow-burning RPG project on the go - it started out as 1/72 and then migrated to "true 25" because there are just so many interesting character figures (from the likes of Ral Partha Europe, Tin Soldier UK and eBay ...).

Here's a Julie Guthrie half-orc with some adventurers from Tin Soldier UK (very cheap and great service!) and a Broadsword/Hinchliffe goblin:

And here's a Ral Partha female fighter with some old Rafm adventurers (old Rafm figures are proper 25s; newer ones with slottabases are definitely not):

Asgard dwarfs are a perfect match for old Citadel dwarfs (Fantasy Tribes, Norse Dwarfs, Dwarf Adventurers, etc., through to the first slottabased ranges and the 80s LotR range). They'd be a bit chunky compared with the Julie Guthrie figures - much bigger heads and hands, and stockier bodies (and some of the early ones and leader types would be huge).

The old Ral Partha dwarfs (the Tom Meier ones) fit very well with Guthrie humans and dwarfs, and you can get away with 1/72 dwarfs from Caesar and Light Alliance; they might have slightly smaller heads than the RP and JG Grenadier ones, but not by much, and if you only have her humans, the 1/72 dwarfs will look just fine.

The Light Alliance 1/72 elves are very big and work perfectly with 1/72; they essentially are 25mm figures. And both the Caesar and Dark Alliance orcs are great (the former are easier to work with but are more cartoony). Caesar lizardmen and ratmen are great too.

Prince August castings are also bang on for this scale; lots of people have them kicking around in the lead pile.

Also, smaller ex-Citadel figures from Foundry - notably the Wars of the Roses and Wars of Religion ranges - are quite a good match for Julie Guthrie's figures. Those ranges are both much more delicate than what came later.

Oathmark goblins and goblin slaves work very well at this scale too, if you want roughly man-sized creatures. And you can use the Oathmark orcs as champions or elites.

Also, you can get quite a few classic Ral Partha figures from Ral Partha Europe, if you're willing to be discerning. The RPE Bob Olley goblins are a good size for true 25mm, as are the Fantasy Adventurers (by and large) and the Heroes and Horrors. There are also some old Ral Partha orcs here (and King Korg in Fantasy Adventurers).

Also, if you don't mind more stylised figures, there's lots of old-school goodness in the Minifigs ranges available from Caliver Books.

Thanks lots to think about there

I picked up a sprue of alliance Rangers on the off chance they are a similar scale outwith the mind I can scalpel off the gear and use it elsewhere if not

I'd also read some of the early reaper range/ thunder bolt mountain were 25mm? Havn't been able to find any comparison shots do far

Think Thunderbolt Mountain are true 25s, though I've never seen any in the 'flesh'.

One obvious option is Denizen Miniatures - very cheap and exquisitely done. They're true 25s. The undead range is amazing.

(Oops - I see they've just gone out of production! You can often pick them up on eBay.)

In case it's useful, here's a comparison of true 25s and 1/72.  The 25mm figures are the plate-armoured RAFM warrior second from the left, the Ral Partha shield maiden third from the right, and the RAFM half-orc on the far right. The rest are 1/72 (MiniArt Burgundian, Zvezda hoplite, Strelets bashi-bazouk, Emhar Viking).

Continued with a little more work this week and started on a bit of scatter terrain too

Suspiciously turning more towards a Robinhood theme if you ask me

The 1970s figures? I picked up a couple of Heritage hobbits for my RPG project, and they're certainly 25mm. I've also got a few of the Orcs of the White Hand - not the ones that tied in with the Bakshi films, but earlier (I think) types from the same manufacturer. They're 25s too.
