Excellent Dave.

I'm very tempted to buy these rules as from what I have seen on Medieval Wargamer's (Nic's) YouTube channel they really have the right feel for the HYW.  8) 8) 8)

Having said that, the unit sizes and number of models do not (IMHO). I wonder if you could give me some reasonably detailed advice on how I could include units on 40mm x 40mm bases with 6-8 bases a unit please?

This, for me, is the clincher in using the rules. :)

There are 2 basic formations for foot.  Bow and crossbow units fire in wide. Melee troops, and bow units that wish to engage in hand to hand combat are in mass.  So for your troops mass could be 2 bases wide and 3 deep and wide 4 bases wide and 1 or 2 deep.  A 6 figure bow unit could have 4 in the front rank and 2 in the second.  Horse are the same width as foot mass and the depth can be whatever looks right.  In terms of game play a unit in mass can only have one enemy unit in base to base contact on each side, so 4 maximum.  Sometimes melee troops can, as an exception, man defences in wide when 2 enemy units can be to their front.

I hope that makes sense. The rules are forgiving on basing.  I have played a number of battles with a friend who is based for Impetus and we simply use a token to indicate whether bow is in wide or mass, it does not break the rules at all.

I'll give it a try as I bought aall of the WoR rules and supplements but wasn't sure how I could get the desired size and shape for my units. :)

I think so. I'll report back.

A few pics of the battle of Mauron

Thanks Matt.

The units still look to be too small for my liking, which is a real shame as after watching Nic's Test of Resolve playthrough on his YouTube channel I am exceedingly impressed by the mechanics matching my idea of how HYW battles were fought; yet again, it's the unit size that tamps down my excitement :)

At least for me; he units need to be much more representative of actual fighting units and not so much leaning more towards "playing pieces".

I really hope there's a way can find that resolves this dichotomy as I am not going to rebase my miniatures unless I can make them fit the rules.

Please treat this post with kindness, I am not being critical of the rules, which I find to be fantastic- rather it is the basing and small unit sizes that bother me.

I agree with you mate, 4 stands per unit looks ridiculously small, but having bought and read the rules, I don’t envisage any issues with making each unit larger in size. It has some very interesting mechanics compared to other medieval rulesets.

Can you explain a wee bit more please Gareth as I'm very keen to use these rules?

Sorry mate, only just saw your question.

As long as both sides are based in a similar way, the unit size makes no difference to the gameplay.

My HYW companies are typically 3 bases wide and two deep, but would still only have the prescribed number of Resolve points for the unit type.

No probs, it happens Gareth (have LAF stopped sending out notifications?)

Brilliant! I'm sold!!! Order incoming ASAP Mr David Knight!  8)
