28mm Aircraft For WW1
« on: October 16, 2024, 08:39:18 AM »
Question.
What scale aircraft do any of you use with 28mm WW1?
Ideally, I'd like to use 1/56, just because they are that tad smaller.
However, I've never seen 1/56 WW1 aircraft kits available.
But there are plenty of 1/48.
What have others done?
Part of me is thinking that, since WW1 aircraft were relatively small anyway, that a 1/48 scale model won't look too imposing.
Anyone else thought about this and what have you done?
Cheers

Me being me (cheap), plenty of 1/48 WW1 aircraft here for 6-7 euros a pop. And as you say, they aren't the biggest aircraft to begin with so why handicap yourself looking for something that isn't as common (and more likely more cost).

Though I have to say, the 2 I have I purely picked up to use as scenic crashed ones, so.....

Smer 1/48 . Cheap as chips, easy to build, ideal for gamers.

I bought a 3D printer last year and have printed up a ton of 1/72 scale aircraft.  I also printed some 1/144 scale in addition to buying a few from Reduced Aircraft Factory but have settled on 1/72 scale, mainly because I can see them better!

My table is 4'x6' and the mat has 4" across-the-flats hexes.

I have 3D printed 31 different types of aircraft so far, using STL files I've purchased or found free online.

Oh...I do have a few 1/48 aircraft but feel they're too big for gaming, unless you have a large space/table.  They are impressive to look at though.  They're too large for the hex mat I use.

Del Prado(?) or another magazine released several in 1/64.  I have Sopwith Camel, Fokker Dr1 and Nieuport 28.  They appear occasionally on ebay.

I build 1/48 scale kits and they are a bit of work.  But they aren't that large.  In fact, I'm often surprised by how small they are.  In my mind 1/48 kits want more detail (like rigging)....

I would recommend 1/72 for most gaming options - they look great and don't (again in my mind) demand a lot of detail.

I want 1/48 or even better 1/54 scale aircraft for 28mm  pulp skirmish gaming, mostly just as terrain or an objective.  for air combat i am quite happy with 1/72.  plenty big.
