Books on Baron Ungern
« on: October 20, 2024, 03:37:31 AM »
While reading up on Mongolia in 1920/21 I came across some books supposedly written by two members of the Asiatic Horse Division and edited by S. L. Kuzmin (С. Л. Кузьмин)

  • N.N. Knyazev : The Legendary Baron  (Н. Н. Князев : Легендарный барон)
  • M. G. Tornovskiy : Events in Khalka Mongolia in 1920-1921 (М.Г. Торновский : События в Монголии-Халхе в 1920–1921 годах: военно-исторический очерк (воспоминания).)

Are these known to anyone? I'm half-tempted to translate them, but I don't want to do that if that has already been done or if they aren't very accurate. Do you know anything about them Cuprum?

The originals apparently had photographs, but my copy doesn't have them.

In 2004, in Russia, the publishing house "KMK Scientific Publications Partnership" published the book "The Legendary Baron: Unknown Pages of the Civil War".
In fact, this book contains the memoirs of two officers:
N.N. Knyazev "The Legendary Baron" and M.G. Tornovsky "Events in Mongolia - Khalkha in 1920-1921. Military - historical essay (memories)".
I know of this book only in an electronic copy of poor quality. The information is quite interesting, including maps of military operations and lists of troop composition.
There are photographs, but they are of poor quality (although most of them can be found in good quality from other sources - their annotations in this book are valuable).
Here is a digital Internet copy, but I am not ready to say whether it is complete. But the photographs are present.

Many thanks Cuprum.

I think I may translate those books. The big call being the maps, now that you have found me a copy.

I'll see if my contact in St Petersburg can get me better quality of the photos.
