Erol Otus inspired fantasy minis?
« on: November 03, 2024, 04:02:20 PM »
Hey!

Does anyone know of a miniatures line (physical or stl) with an Erol Otus-like look? It would be fun to run an old-school game with minis inspired by classic art.

Mirliton Miniatures has most of the ‘80s Grenadier miniatures in production and there are several dragons with riders.

For example: https://www.mirliton.it/knight-riding-dragon-2-me059?search=Dragon%20&page=2

If you put “dragon” in the search on the website a bunch of others will show up.

Ral Partha's a good shout, but I'd also have a look at Tin Soldier UK. A lot of their stuff is like Ral Partha redesigned by Minifigs - very stylised and very distinctive. I think they would look tremendous in Otus-ish bright colours (indeed, I'm painting up some of the orcs at the moment in an attempt at a similar style):

There may be a direct Erol Otus influence in there too: they do a terrific hydra (for a fiver!) that's clearly inspired by the Sutherland illustration in the Monster Manual, so they're drawing on the early D&D vibe (the figures are decades old and originally Australian, I think). To my eye, a lot of the slightly baroque shapes of weapons and armour are very Otus-ish.

It's worth noting that Tin Soldier also has the best service in the business. I made a small order last week and got it the next day! And the figures are extraordinarily cheap (typically a quid a figure).

This Tin Soldier 15mm dragon strikes me as very Otus-y:

The old Minifigs ranges (still in production at Caliver Books) are also worth a look. Some were official AD&D figures at the time of the Monster Manual, etc.; others are clearly influenced by Rodney Matthews but still have the same sort of surreal look:

eBay's also a fertile source of Minifigs stuff - there seems to be a lot of it in circulation.

Sadly, Otherworld miniatures has closed, but you can still find them on ebay or other 2nd hand sites. They offered 2 Drow that were direct EO illustrations made into miniatures.

Was not aware that otherworld is gone. A real loss, they were highly nostalgic.

I believe Crooked Dice have picked up a lot of the Otherworld stuff, certainly the Pig Faced Orcs and the Ogres, others may follow...

Probably not the scale you're looking for, but I feel in 15mm Splintered Light has that feel, including pig-faced orcs (as well as more Jackson-esque orcs).
