Oddly specific request: wyvern skull part for helmet?
« on: November 04, 2024, 12:22:45 PM »
Hi friends,

My D&D character has acquired a wyvern skull and decided to make into a helmet because... well, it should look cool and come with bragging rights  lol

However I now need to find a suitable bit to convert a Dark Sword ranger with.

Anyone know of any? I suspect it'll need to be a small wyvern in order to not look ridiculous.

GW does a sprue of miscellaneous skulls and a few on there look suitable, does anyone have one they can post a size comparison for?

TIA

I have the set, and most skulls are human sized, with the ork and genestealer ones slightly bigger.

The Bloodletter skulls might work in a pinch, especially sans several horns, but they're not quite dragon/wyvern shaped. Then there's also a beastman skull, which might work with the goat horns removed, but it's probably too small to bring the idea across.

There is a dragon head in there, but trust me; it's way too big to be used as headgear. Unless your character has a really, really big noggin' lol

Miniatures you say? Well I too, like to live dangerously...

Would a toy dinosaur skeleton skull do?  Lots on ebay.

I think those are the ones I was eyeballing (pun intended).

In the attached image, roughly how large are the ones I've pointed to?

The Dark Sword minis are quite realistically proportioned, although on the tall side for nominally 28mm, so if anything they have small noggins  lol So no dragon heads :D

The beastman one might be a goer - who is to say what a wyvern skull looks like?! And/or it was a small wyvern...

In the game he killed it by pretty much pulling its head off while it was magically subdued so it's borderline unheroic as far as trophies go... rule of cool though! :D

Would a toy dinosaur skeleton skull do?

Oooo interesting idea! Triceratops sans-frill perhaps... the problem is I've no idea how large they are! I suspect they might be huge for a 28mm bonce.

Edit: mutter mutter forgot the *****y image mutter

Assuming that image is from GW's skull box, that'll be big for 28mm. Can look after dinner, see if I can post a pic

There are various dracolich and undead wyvern miniatures on sites like Etsy and EBay. Carefully remove the head and you have a wyvern skull. Worth a look?

Not plastic but how about clipping the head of one of these and painting it up as a skull helm.

Those cheap plastic dinosaurs are way too big, the tallest pushing 3 inches high.

Great ideas, thanks!

The RPE one might be a winner, plus it's an excuse to put an order in  lol

The reaper bones chap has the right sort of look but I think I'd struggle to separate that cleanly.

So... GW skull sprue = easiest, might be over-sized (TBC)
RPE dragon guys = great look, but a fairly small wyvern, and will take some skill (which I may or may not have  lol)

It's a remote campaign in which I'm a player, I just like having a mini representation of my characters for posterity and for the occasional meetup :)

The DM requested I get some art/portrait commissioned to show the helmet... but I was already planning a mini, so here we are!
