Sengoku Era Mass Battle
« on: November 04, 2024, 07:26:42 PM »
I have started painting the Ashigaru from Wargames Atlanic in 10mm and I am wondering about basing and rules sets.

After looking at Gareth Beamish(i think its him anyway) 6mm blog he using mixed troop type big bases, I'm happy to do that.  But am looking for guidence as to what and how many.

Also there is a Facebook group which inclued a file for rule changes for Hail Caesar/Pike and Shotte btu i can't find the FB page now.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

And whilst I'm here are there any online rescources to show which clans allied with which, for banner paniting.

Thanks

If you're doing a large base to represent a 'sonae' then maybe something like a front rank of missile troops, then 2 ranks of ashigaru spears and a rear rank of foot or mounted samurai. With a command group in the middle, behind the ashigaru. It all depends on how many figures you want to paint as to how many figures in each rank.

The FB group was probably the Feudal Japanese Wargaming one:

Alliances shifted quite a bit across the period of the Sengoku Jidai, so it really depends on what part of Japan, and what year(s) you're looking at.

The only ruleset designed for Sengoku specific big battles is Peter Pig's Battles in the Age of War.

I’d have thought Killer Katanas would also qualify. I’m not sure about its current availability, however.

Yes, at the larger end of troop ratio per stand, Killer Katanas would qualify.  Out of print, used copies can be hunted down.

You may decide to go for house rules. That's what I did, creating a Sengoku version of "Dragon Rampant" using the sonae as the base unit. Each sonae is represented by 3 stands - one with mostly missiles, one with the bushi, and one with the commander and banner - and the arrangement of these stands shows how the sonae is optimized (I simplified the various formations to three: "Birds in Flight" for most maneuverability, "Arrowhead" for strongest attack, and "Keyhole" for strongest firepower). I've playtested it with my club a couple of times and I'm fairly pleased with it.

I’m going to try using the Arguing When Money Talks rules for it.  Just waiting on the command figures to be released

At the Fall In wargames convention, I picked up the Sengoku-era wargames rules "No Dachi No Dice". It seems to have interesting concepts and tries to replicate historical deployments and other aspects (honor, etc). I think the rules are about 25 (smaller) pages and the rest of the book is scenarios.

I haven't read them thoroughly, just a quick flip-thru but I purchased them with those Wargames Atlantic 10mm figures in mind.
