Withfinder General rules
« on: November 08, 2024, 09:04:34 AM »
A few days ago we celebrated Halloween. To be in this period, I read that there was a rule that was similar to "Withfinder General". Have some members of this forum already played and if so could they talk about it and tell their impressions?  ;)

I actually picked up a copy of Witchfinder General for free yesterday having bought it when  1st released back in 2011, but selling it on unplayed a few years ago.  I seem to recall a game set in "Puritan America" but for the life of me can't recall the name. Wargames Vault sell a game called "Devilry Afoot" but not much detail.

There are plans for Witchfinder General to be republished I believe.

Whilst out of print, the author did have a few copies available. Whether he still has any I don't know, might be worth an email

Thank you all for your replies. For those who have a copy and have never played it, perhaps you would like to part with it?
If not, I will try to find the author's email to ask if he still has a copy for sale.  ;)

Thanks Radar for your information, I saw on the battlefieldhobbies site that they only send to Great Britain for the moment, I live in France. I just sent them an email to see if they could send it to me.
Otherwise I also wrote an email to dashingdicegames, to see if he had a copy left. Alea jacta est.  ;)

I have Witchfinder General - awful ruleset, no flavour of the period at all, the various monsters and witches are all just units in a vampire army and historically there is no vampire lore from this period. I was very disappointed with the whole thing, it was just a Warhammer clone essentially.

Devilry Afoot on the other hand is <chefs kiss>

I have Devil Afoot. Haven't play it yet.
It is a pretty standard type of rule set for this
type of game. You have a variety of different heroes and
monsters. Each comes with certain abilities. Then you can pick
various skills and traits and weapons.

I played Witchfinder General lots of times (as you will find on my blog) and always with great enjoyment.

The game is a skirmish game with small units and individuals in which firearms are powerful one shot weapons (assuming you hit what you aim for) that supports multiple players. The witchcraft and monster lore worked fine with me with some genuine 17th century flavour mixed in with classic wargaming/roleplaying mechanisms. I liked the alternate IGO-UGO mechanics which played pretty fluid. Unfortunately it is OOP.

Witchin 'Hour is made by a pal of mine and I was one of the playtesters (and the illustrator). It is a 2-player game with a counter-based action management system. Players play witches and their minions against witchhunters and their henchmen. It is a quick game that has an interesting asymmetry as witches and witchhunters play very differently. It is still available from his Hazardgames.
