AWT - just a couple of questions (or so...)
« on: November 25, 2024, 05:58:18 PM »
So, my 'A War Transformed' book arrived today and I've been leafing through it whilst I try to sort out my French, but a couple of things caught my eye. First, why are Lewis guns automatic rifles in an infantry section but are magically transformed into HMG's when on a Mk.IV tank? Seriously - the male version had 2 big guns and 3 Lewis guns, the female had 2 HMG's and 3 Lewis guns, not both on the same tank. Second - can I summon more than 1 of a creature on the table? (ie do I need more than one figure for each). Thirdly, this fascination with dredging up "prehistoric megafauna" remains in trawler nets still makes me chortle - if there are remains there, they are the same distance under the surface as the ones found on the UK mainland, with several metres of 220,000 years worth of sediment on top, not lying around on the surface to be trawled up. Circus animal bones from a shipwreck, not "prehistoric megafauna".  lol

Hadn’t paid that much attention to the weapons on the tanks - I’d assume they were an abstraction - but super easy to change.

We have found armoured cars are astonishingly good, stabilised HMG, mobility, armour. Overall it feels the vehicle rules are a bit weak. We are playing in 10mm so plenty of vehicles is no challenge.

Summoning - there isn’t a hard rule to stop you summoning more than 1 of a creature. But there is a practical limit in that summoning dice are hard to accumulate so its hard to get more than one in play at once, and summoned creatures tend to be priority targets so don’t last that long.

I think there is an implicit movement of the grounds inline with the receding seas - it lets you put some cool bone models on the table.

Yeah - I'm doing French but came across a couple of oddities like that like why don't Colonial assault troops have (at the least) nco options?
Honestly, I get the bones thing and, frankly, I can't see the difference between an elephant skeleton and a (small) mammoth skeleton - either would be cool as a terrain piece. I just find it hilarious to read about this (debunked) 'megafauna' myth - those bones would be at least 6 metres below the seabed!

Just looking at the lists and wondering whether to do Conveners or Harrowed as a unit? I've got the models just trying to work out which might be better on the table.

The slow speed of the Harrowed made me lean to the Coveners - but neither appealed that much from a game play perspective.  I’m pretty sure they’ve not been field in our games - not least as I found the figures for them sitting in the lead mountain the other day!

Well I have a box of Wargames Atlantic French Resistance that I shall cut the weapons off and either use as zombie-like harrowed and/or conveners after adding axes and blades, so I may be doing a spot of experimenting...
I can see their uses as ablative armour or cannon fodder to shield other units (cavalry shield?) but the size of game might dictate how to use them, I think.

And I think I may have found my Harrowed figures - Wargames Atlantic have redone their zombies in a new 'Pulp Adventures' box - lots of heads; Wild West, Napoleonic and WW1 - at least 2 different for each period. They look rather good and a massive improvement over the last ones.

Well I have started to paint some of my figures but I've sorta got a little bit distracted. In keeping with my initial idea of just (mainly) using figures that I've had sitting around doing very little and now getting repurposed as AWT (sort of) figures, I have been using ww2 us marines with Adrian helmets and converted rifles as AWT ww1 AVL with enfield rifles, and so I got distracted by the idea of using ww2 Afrika Korps as AWT ww1 Seebataillon soldiers for a Freikorps unit, with converted creatures. It's all rather ballooned somewhat and I find myself making up 3 forces, not just the 1 I'd initially planned on doing. Pictures to follow eventually!
Madness indeed!  o_o

The madness gets you!

Just a little tweak to these figures, oh and these ones would work nicely, and I could just do that force…
