Best 28mm Germans?
« on: December 07, 2024, 12:13:48 PM »

Thinking of starting some new mid war German units. I'd consider mixing early war or even late war figures in with them. Who do you think makes the best ones?

The Empress ones are very nice.

Artizan, Crusader, Perry and Warlord Games are also very good. It’s personal preference really. I like the Artizan figures as IMO they have a lot of character and I find them easier to paint. Empress, Warlord and Perry look more realistic IMO and have a lot of detail.

To maximise on a. Variety of poses / figures….i mix Artizan with Warlord and a few Crusader minis.  I love the Empress minis but struggle for mixing personally.

Maybe Offensive and Empress will mix though?   That would be a good combo perhaps?

The ones with their hands in the air, surrendering. :)

Empress are superb but if you want figures that virtually paint themselves and also match perfectly with an early war range, look at Artizan (late war) and Crusader (early war) similar sculpting style and they share the same weapon sculpts.

Have a look at this thread.

Capn Jim has mixed quite a few ranges and they all seem to work well with each other.

Indeed I have.  I have Warlord (metals and plastics), Artizan Designs, Black Tree Designs, Harlequin, Empress, Perry, Wargames Atlantic, and Wargames Factory.  They all can go on the same table, in my opinion, and in a game, they all are fine together.

However, there are some slight differences in size.  I have found that Warlord, Artizan, Black Tree, and Harlequin are a bit beefier than Perry, Wargames Atlantic, and Margames factory.  Empress falls somewhere in the middle.  But, as I mentioned, they all have variously appeared on the same table in our WW2 games.

Thanks for the info, I have never heard of Harlequin but checked eBay and was impressed.

These look very promising. I had not realized there were so many fine options. Now all I have to do is make up my mind.

Victrix is coming out with late war Germans early next year that look absolutely stunning and will scale with Warlord minis.

They look stunning unfortunately they are all wearing smocks and shelter halves and to be quite honest I just don't have the skill to paint splinter camo. I want Germans in plain grey uniforms.
Warlord has a new sprue of veterans coming out that look like my best option.

Know what you’re saying. Empress do some amazing LW Brits in smocks. Despite there being an excellent thread on here how to paint them I don’t think they would look that good with my painting skills.

That said there are some excellent guides on painting German camo types on the Artizan website by Mick Farnworth.

Those Victrix ones do look interesting.  And Warlord is releasing another box of plastic German infantry in January - I'll be sure to check them out... https://us.warlordgames.com/products/german-veteran-infantry-platoon

The zeltbahn camo really isn't that hard, the way I do it.  I aim for the effect, instead of an exact copy.  For table-top viewing, that does the trick for me, anyway.
