28mm Water Tower from Bad Goblin Games
« on: December 14, 2024, 05:25:56 PM »

Hi everyone! This could go in a number of areas, but I will likely use it in my post-apocalyptic games most. So, here it is, probably the tallest piece of terrain in my collection standing 14" tall. It is a 3-D printed, 28mm water tower from Bad Goblin Games. I picked it up from them at Historicon this past July, snagging one of their last ones (only $20, how can you not?). They're back in stock, so check out their website (link in my blog entry below) if you want one, too.

It was easy to put together with the various levels gluing together securely. The only modification that I did to it was to cut a hole in the platform for the upper ladder to go through. That and actually trimming and gluing the two ladders themselves in place. I had enough ladder left over to use it for the back of my Zombie RV (https://leadlegionaries.blogspot.com/2024/10/rv-scratch-build-forwell-zombie-rv.html) I modified earlier this year.

I spray painted the entire thing black, first. Then I did my usual and brushed over a 50/50 mixture of acrylic black paint and water once it was dry. I did three layers of steel coloring -- all metallic craft paints. The first was Gunmetal Gray, then Pewter highlights, and finally Silver highlight on highlight...  lol. Next, I went over it all with a black vehicle wash slightly watered down. In hindsight, I should have gone over it full strength, as the wash usually blends and softens the layers. This time, I'm not so sure the watered down version did as good of a job.

I flocked the bottom, giving it clumps of Woodland Scenics to make for a slightly overgrown look. I went back and forth on whether to "rust" the metal, but decided not to do it. I'd be curious to see what you guys think of it. Did I muck it up and take a pretty piece of 3-D printed scenery and do a half-bothered job on it? Or does it look okay?

To read more details about how I put it together, check out my Lead Legionaries blog entry on it:

I like this.

It is very shiny and new looking. But that can be a plot point of its own!

Sure you could dirty and rust it up, but the shiny silver has an appeal to it.

That water tower does indeed look nice.  Nice and new(ish).  Not even a town name on it yet... :D
