Raised Market Hall - Miniature Wargames issue 502
« on: January 09, 2025, 09:17:06 AM »

The latest issue of Miniature Wargames (issue 502 for February 2025) features this scratch built raised market hall that was originally featured in my self published and limited edition book Dampfpanzerwagon Guide No. 1 - Building Wargame Terrain.

The model was built from plastic card and foam with DAS modelling clay detail.

At least it does not have chicken legs!

It reminds me of the Beverley Market place in Yorkshire - it has a bandstand (I think) that has a little roof and windowed building at the top.

I've just googled that and that doesn't qualify as a building on top - its a skylight for an attic and even less practical as a useable space, but then I would say from the design it was never intended to be useable as anything other than storage.

I think the main point is that this was based on an illustration in a fantasy magazine (Cry Havoc). It was never meant to be a historical structure.

I get that, but for me, even fantasy buildings need to make sense. As a granary of somekind, I'd go with that, but it just doesn't make sense as a market hall - no easy access to the upper floor and no room for a market underneath... it's just odd.

Not that odd.  There are several examples in my area.

several examples with easy access to the court/hall upstairs and room for a couple of traders underneath... I'm literally building one like that at the moment in my Witchhunter thread.
