Vbcw global campaign 2025
« on: January 12, 2025, 10:12:34 PM »
Hello, in the vbcw forum there was talk about doing a global campaign.
But in the end I think I can't do it.

Should we try to do it this year? Id anyone interested? Take a mod area and those interested will play, creating characters, and the situation of the area.

Am I very crazy?

You're not mad.

We ran a worldwide VSF campaign about 12 years ago on the forum.

It was weird and clunky but I thought it was fun!

Have you tried asking people?

There's quite a big VBCW contingent here. Maybe nearly as big as VSF! I'm sure you could persuade some people to get in on the action. Heck, I have a few figs I could call on if it came to it, it might be just the push I need to get some more painting done.

Have you got any ideas for how it might work?

Could it have an ACW II component?

Maybe saying it's an 'Alt. Hist. 1930s campaign' could incorporate both, and any other spin-offs?

I don't know what Mendoza has in mind but potentially it opens up the campaign to more players.

The fact it didn’t get going didn’t stop me doing it :-)

Lot of to-ing and fro-ing resulted in not much happening bar an expenditure of treasure. The aerial side came along nicely, though. The last game saw terrible performance by the aircraft fitters, as both sides quickly ran out of ammunition?

My idea was that the games were related in some way. We can play in the same county and there is some kind of relationship between the events For example, if one bombs a bridge and does not destroy it, another can do a command-type action.

OK... but what I meant was, do you have any idea about how people in (let's say) Sacramento, and Adelaide, and Herefordshire, would all combine their results?

Presumably, you're not thinking everyone sets their games in Herefordshire. Do people in Sacramento get to play ACWII, or do they have to play VBCW? What do people in Australia do? Play VBCW set in Britain, or can they play out scenarios where Australian factions fight it out there?

The way we worked the Atlantis campaign was that each group of gamers took an area, and then reported on the battles they'd fought there. That I think is a viable model for this - every group takes a county or state or province or whatever, and ten reports how things are going there. We start in say January 1936 (or whatever, maybe we need to discuss the 'origin'), and progress the timeline by 3 months every month, or something like that, with each group reporting how things are going in their area.

Honestly, I think it's do-able.

The thing about VBCW is that it is literally a Very BRITISH Civil War... so not quite sure how battles in Sacramento, Australia, or anywhere that isn't in Britain would fit the theme.  It would be like having a shoot out between rival farmers in Yorkshire having an effect on the American Civil War.

The difference with VSF is that it is not confined to just Britain, it is global.

Just my tuppence worth though.

Well, leadfool suggested an ACWII component, so that led me to think that the thing could be an alt. hist 1930s campaign, of which VBCW will be a component. Australia was part of the Empire, so anything happening happening in The Old Country would affect things there, and vice versa.

We could come up with situations where a win for a faction in one part of the world is reported, and inspires an allied faction elsewhere, or even directly aids them. We could come up with 'world alliances' that could help each other.

I think, probably, it's not beyond our collective wit to invent a way to make it work.

If we want to. If we don't, then we don't have to.

My idea was that we all play a county so we could develop it and incorporate it into the overall story. Of course, we can play scenarios in other places that are related, like spies, smugglers, etc.

There was an old Google Maps map that people were playing with. It would be great if we could recover it, because I have no idea where it is.

What I'd like to do is something more developed, creating characters and common situations, like what I do on the blog, but on a larger scale.

If you look at the blog, there are non-player characters, and stories that happen besides the battles, and everything is linked to the map.

OK - I've knocked up a newspaper clipping.

This is the situation in January 1937 as I have gleaned it - as it relates to England, and at least constitutionally to the British Empire. Edward VIII has refused to resign, has dismissed Parliament, and appointed Moseley as his Prime Minister. Various factions have formed, the country is divided between those who support the King, those who would see him abdicate in favour of his brother Albert, and those who would do away with monarchy and capitalism to boot, and institute a socialist republic.

I suggest that any groups of players who want to play in the "Alternative 1937 World Campaign", whether that's as VBCW, or ACWII, or any other real or unreal conflict, respond below, saying where they will be setting their battles.

For England, I think the easiest method is if groups pick a county - preferably, the one you're in. For people elsewhere, my suggestion would be that someone nominates themself as a co-ordinator and sets up some national 'situation' analogous to the situation I've outlined for England.

I'll post the map tomorrow, I have to go to bed...

There are 42 traditional (pre-1974) counties in England, and I've only looked at England.

I divided them up equally between the three factions - for Edward, for Albert (who became King George), and for socialism.

Because I d6ed them all, I have other info too. A 1 meant for Edward, but Albert was the main challenger. A 2 meant for Edward, but the socialists were the main challengers. Likewise for Albert, but with Edward or socialism as the main challenger, or the socialists were in control but either Edward's or Albert's supporters were the main challenger.

In some counties control may be paper-thin. There are some rural counties where, probably mostly due to the weakness and disarray of their opponents (who are too busy fighting each other) the socialists have made unexpected headway. In other areas, local bigwigs or military commanders have acted quickly to establish control outwitting what may be thought likely to be strong socialist movements, or sometimes the socialists are themselves split by different factions.

The point is the map only gives 'starting positions' - the campaign will change the map dramatically (I hope).

Link to the initial map:

My suggestion for anyone who wants to take part is to comment below saying what county you want to fight your battles in. If this is an 'unreal' county (Middlemarch, Borsetshire etc) message me and we can work it out. If it's your own county, so much the better.

If you are outwith England, and want to get involved, I'm sure we can arrange that too. If you want to set yourself up as mod for whatever area of the world you're in, I think you should.

Apart from that, have at it!*
