Query about old Tamiya and Bandai WWII models
« on: February 20, 2025, 05:45:40 PM »
Good morning fellow LAFers.
In my battle to reclaim some precious storage space I have come across some Tamiya and Bandai kits from the late 60s. I have no idea how I got them since I never had any interest in WWII modeling.
I was wondering if they were worth anything at all; I'm not really looking to make money on them but it could be useful to get an idea for perhaps possible trades.
If this topic violates the rules of the board please forgive me and I shall address the matter promptly.

To be honest, I'd be surprised if someone gave a lot of money for them, especially with missing parts or in half built state. An unopened box maybe.
Thing is with these 50 years old kits is that they are regularly re-released (in case of Tamiya, basically constantly in their catalogue), sometimes by another company, so the one who wants exactly these sprues had many opportunity to get them, those who want the subject, they have loads of newer, higher quality kits to choose from. Especially in the ww2 German topic.

You may find some interest in 1/35th or 1/32nd bits amongst Weird War or Post Apocalypse gamers wanting things like helmets and hands. These are useful for converting standard wargame ogres and such into large size creatures (I always seem to be on the scrounge for German helmets and Panzerfausts for my ubersoldaten). Likewise in such settings it is easy to disguise an actual vehicle kit without worrying about accuracy or scale.

There are also some display modellers who use these figures with all uniform details scraped and sanded off as torso dollies for one off scratchbuilt figures. Apparently that is easier than sculpting a base dolly from scratch.

Sadly old sprues, even Tamiya, are nowhere near the quality of figures diorama modellers can get as standard these days. Probably no real value to sell but maybe some trade value to someone.

They certainly bring out memories for me. I must have built every 1/35 scale German model Taniya put out and significant numbers of Bandai in 1/48. If I were in a better place for indulging a whim, I would buy these from you but the lead and plastic pile is just too bloody huge.

Thank you all guys!
I wasn't expecting them to be worth much; the fact that I have no recollection of how I even acquired them speaks to the fact that it must not have been a particularly sought after purchase; most likely a donation of or find.

I'll see if someone wants them for free (perhaps just covering shipping) in the bazar forum, I'd rather someone gets some (any) use out of them, rather than take up space and dust with me.
