SCW Spanish regular iInfantry- Very much WIP- picture heavy
« on: December 11, 2009, 02:07:06 PM »
Since I've always wanted Spanish infantry in guerera jackets, I had decided to convert some Woodbine Turks and combine them with Empress heads.
Got about 60 done now and started to paint them, when I felt that perhaps it would be better to show them before they were completely done.

The conversions are easy enough for anyone to attempt. Just replace the Woodbine head with an Empress one and the work is already half done.
As Nigel pointed out there are a few differences between the Turkish and the Spanish webbing, so I replaced the small double cartridge boxes with a much bigger single one. Some of the figures also got a third one on their back.
I clipped off all the rucksacks and replaced these with simple Y webbing, but that is absolutely not necessary.
Still not perfect ( the haversack attaches to a separate strap worn over the shoulder and not the belt) but IMHO they look 'Spanish' enough to pass muster.

It looks to have really worked out. Well done that man!  :)

I'm sure I've seen the moustache on No.2 somewhere before though

Looking good Willie.
do some with the Spanish steel helmet as well mate.

You could also get away with using the Brit bodies with the Gorillo hats to make some Foreign Legion types, as they had the Mills pattern webbing. Look for any that are in shirt sleeves.

Hi Nigel!  I've just ordered 30+ Spanish helmets... :D
Will have another look at those British troops. Can't be all that difficult to make an Enfield look like a Mauser. Thanks!

The only drawback with the legion is that they wore their shirt open as a matter of pride (they were the only unit allowed to do so), even when wearing the tunic. This might create more of a modelling workload than the fact that they have the right webbing. I'm not sure whether they followed this tradition in cold weather as much though.

The Lee Enfield was used in some numbers in the SCW, it was one of many assorted weapons supplied by Russia, along with Lee Metfords, Mannlichers etc. Unfortunately the Nationalists didn't use it. There is bound to be someone out there who does seperate Mausers surely?

Those are cool looking do You have any pictures of them fully painted?
I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it anymore and what is it seems weird and scary.
