« on: December 13, 2009, 04:42:45 PM »
Anyone know of any figures for British Mounted police. I'm looking for uniforms etc suitable for interwar. Size/Scale: 25mm - to fir in with Musketeer sized figures.

Thanks

Try converting some late Victorian cavalry, they have a similar uniform and helmet.

Yes joroas is right. I'd recommend Empress miniatures Natal mounties as it's the same sculptor. The differences in dress are minimal at 28mm. You could lose the helmet spike and if you can live with the fact that the carbine should be a Lee Enfield rifle then they should be ideal.

Jim - just taken a look at them and they look very nice but they're a bit too military for me. Too much weaponry and equipment. I'm looking for coppers in day-to-day dress and with standard police equipment. Regrettably, I don't trust mysel to be able to trim them and cut them into what I want.

You'll probably be out of luck then Doug. Unless of course some appear in the near future, which is not entirely impossible, given that 12 months ago there weren't any armed police on foot about either.  :)

I'm not familiar at all with what a mounted policeman of the '30s would look like, but how about doing head swaps on a mountie (RCMP)? Murch makes onehttp://www.pulpfigures.com/catcode.php?range=Yukon%20Peril&code=PYP&number=1&custID=136142250561260893505 but I'm sure I've seen others in the past.

Could you do anything with the OFFENSIVE MINIATURES  mounted riot police ,they are modern but they might be a starting point

Dex

PS
Having just had a closer look they are probably too modern for you

Yes - I think they are too modern. Also (and I could be wrong but.....) those horses look really small. I'm always impressed by how huge police horses are, certainly here in Britain. Those look like big Apache ponies to me..

I haven't had any luck finding pics of what I want - when I google British Mounted police I seem to get mainly RCMP, as it happens. I'm guessing that in the inter-war, they would have had a uniform more or less the same as regular coppers - I don't think there were many specialist uniforms round in those days. I'll take a look atthe RCMPfigures and see what they're like.

This pic is sometime between 1935-39... probably 1938. The steel helmet would be replaced by the archetypical police helmet earlier and obviously the gas masks wouldn't be carried earlier. If they were being used in a military role (i.e. Ireland) they would likely have bandoliers rather than infantry type cartridge boxes.

The police tunic was close collared and was used between c. 1870 to c.1947 when it was replaced by the open collared tunic with shirt and tie.

Wow... what a great photo.

Notice how the policeman sits his horse... perfect posture!  And he sports a mustache and gloves.  His horse and furnishings are lovely.

This would make a superb mini!

Empress do some nice Natal troopers that need the ammo belt removed or there is: http://www.empressminiatures.com/userimages/procart3.htm is an inspector and constable. I know Inspectors wore this kind of dress early in the late 19th, early 20th, but not sure how long for.

 :-*

I love horses and cavalry.  :-*

Notice how the gentlemen sits in his horse.  This posture is very rarely accurately portrayed in almost every mini I have ever seen sculpted.

The back is somewhat arched, the shoulders thrown slightly backwards, the head erect and the ball of the foot placed on the stirrup.

The foot placement is especially significant.  No one, and I mean no one, accurately sculpts the correct placement of the foot in the stirrup, which, with an English stirrup should be the ball and not the arch resting on the stirrup.  The placement of the arch of the foot in the stirrup (which is always used by sculptors)  is characteristic of the Western saddle, but totally incorrect for the English saddle.

The Empress minis (I have them and have painted them) are fairly close, especially the Sargent and the Officer.  However, they both sport carbines and pistols and no swords.  Still... they are probably the closest you will find.

Cheers.
