Russian Civil War Tanks
« on: December 16, 2009, 11:33:59 AM »
Hi,

which tanks could be used on the White Russian side (didn't find a good source on the net) ? Furthermore which manufacturer produce nice tanks of that period ?

I only surfed the Company B page, but couldn't find pictures there. I live in Germany, so a european distributor would be great, but not necessary.

greetings jan

There is an Osprey on this, IIRC.  Essentially, the Western powers provided tanks to the Whites, but they generally lost them pretty quickly to the Reds.  The most common tanks were French FT-17 and British MkV (hermaphrodites were apparently the most popular).  Brigade Games makes both of them.

Force of Arms does another FT-17, available her: http://www.thewcp.co.uk/shop.php?CatID=176

I recommend asking Michael from Miniaturicum (Lurch on this Forum), or Battlefield Berlin. Both can get most stuff.

FT-17s were fielded by the Poles in large numbers, by the French in Odessa, and (briefly) by the Far Eastern Army in  eastern Siberia.

The battlefield use of FT-17s by the Whites and Reds in the main southern theatre is slight, and possibly imaginary.

The most useful tank for Whites is the hermaphrodite Mark V, since it was used the longest in the south and also by Iudenich in the drive on Petrograd. (Plus the British in the North.)

(BTW: the number of tank actions in the whole Civil War, all fronts including Poland, could possibly be counted on fingers and toes.)

Off course mark is right on this. While being useful against entrenchments on the crimea lines they are way to slow for the manouevre warfare that's been so typical for RCW. But they are coopl, aren't they? lol

Poliorketes: I have tanks in my RCW army for the Whites and Allies, although I draw the line at giving them to the Reds. Mark Vs and Whippets in case I ever do a Kakhovka or Tsaritsyn battle.

Many people coming to the RCW have a romantic idea of tanks all over the place, which I try to ensure is corrected.  ;)   That may seem cruel, but spares them finding out too late the deflationary truth that the RCW is not WWI with extra tanks.

When it comes to WW1 tanks (as used during RCW) I would go for Emhar. They 1:72 scale, i.e. small next to a 28 mm mini, but inexpensive, easy to find, nicely detailed and built great.

Here a couple of mine (the top one in Russian colours)

There seems to be something wrong with our bloody ships today...turn two points to port.

Thanks for all the useful answers, now I just have to wait for my wallet to revover ;)

@Tom, although they are really cheap I think I'm going for true 28mm tanks :) There are other players using tanks and it wouldn't look right, if mine stood out scalewise that much.
