Indeed in some parts of Africa the darker your skin the higher you are ranked socially, although this varies from ethnic group to ethnic group - the 'Blue People' in particular have considerable contempt for 'white' Africans whose black skin just isn't, well, black enough.

Aha... Thank you TW. A very good explanation.
So I got it completely wrong then - I should have made the boss man blacker!  :D

Probably, yes! Although he could have got there through being harder than anyone else. In fact that's likely anyway...!

Here are the first 10 all together...
I really like the fluidity of these figures. They LOOK lithe, loose-limbed, and purposeful. Perfect...

I have 10 more prepped and in various stages of completion, but they're going to have to wait until the New Year now... I also now have some pure-bred Copplestone Ngoni to mix in with them in due course.

More in 2010! Thanks for the kind words  :)

Merry Zulu Christmas!

Oooooh.... I likes them...  :-*

Maybe the big fella's skin isn't exactly historically accurate, but it helps him stand out from the crowd, and looks bloody fantastic.

I'm thinking 30, max  ::)

It's only a skirmish force - I'm not refighting Islandlwana...

I could rapidly tire of painting all that brown...

Plus that means I only need to paint 2 Brits for a good balanced game  ;)

(Not that I'm currently planning on painting any Brits at all!)

Ah, but after all that brown, you'll need to paint some red and blue to redress the balance  ;)

absolutely amazing, as I redundantely join the acclaim - nothing to add

I would really like to know how long You need to paint one

I would really like to know the source of this remark, be it literature or personal experience. I have never heard of this kind of differentiation and I am curious and eager to expand my knowledge.

Second-hand personal experience (a friend who travelled in North Africa told a story of an extremely dark-skinned waiter abusing an African customer for being 'white'), but mainly it's due to an article on the role of racism in ethnic and tribal conflict in Africa which I read in my first year of Sociology at LSE. Unfortunately I can't remember the name of the article, journal, or author...!

But the piece about the 'Blue People' stuck in my mind, not least because normally the 'Blue People' refers to the Taureg, but here was being used for Nilotic people in, if I recall correctly, North Africa (and more particularly Sudan-Somalia). The 'Blue' was descriptive; their skin is so dark that it appears almost blue-black.

A bit like Grace Jones? Her skin is so dark as to sometimes appear to have a blue-ish shade. Must be a bugger to paint effectively  :?
