Yes...it comprises 25% of Earth's crust. Silicon dioxide (silica, pure quartz) was a popular tool material in the stone age.

Silicone (not to be confused with Silicon) wasn't that popular until the 20th century, though.

(Note 1: Generally I don't make fun of people's spelling. This one was just too good to pass.  ;) )
