Goalsystem X-Com, UFO Defense
« on: December 31, 2009, 01:24:04 AM »
A pal of mine in our University's games club dug up some old X-Com wargame rules.  They turned out to be a pretty close aproximation of the computer game.  I think the rules may have been taken directly from the game, with dice, figures and minis used instead of a computer.  While the game was fun, it seemed a bit too complicated to me.  Looking at the new edition of the Supersystem I've begun doing a conversion, creating a hybrid of that system and Chaos in Cairo.  I'm using the creation rules for the former game, while using the latter's mechanics.

Here's some of the Troops I've created so far.

I'm not familiar with the system but anyone gaming XCOM on the table top gets a thumbs up from me!

I did something very similar, adapting the computer game rules.  The system works pretty well on it's own, all I had trouble doing was assigning points values.  Much fun!  Particularly when you get a player who knows x-com with a few that don't.

veteran:  "Oh, crap."

Snake men are not quite as terrifying as those terror beasts that turn people into zombies.  I hated those things.

There are people who make it their hobby to disassemble, eviscerate if you will, the mechanics of these more strategic computer games, to better figure out the perfect strategy. Its not hard to find that online, and sometimes the creators of the game will actually provide the systems mechanic. Then it’s as simple as replacing random number generation with dice and making a turn sequence list of things the engine checks for you.

Actually, snake men aren't frightening at all, and quite easy to drop. The chrysalids, on the other hand, are and I very rarely participate in night terror missions with these buggers present.

I like the bug that makes you permanently control a chrysalid though. Good for making your own X-COM friendly zombies. ;)

In X-COM, a rookie's stats were randomly generated you should know. And your preset inventory is a bit too rigid for strategy purposes.

Oh, and if you decide to implement mutons you should work in an automatic cover bonus/modifier for spot-checking depending on what you're doing. Those who've seen these bastards in-game know what I'm getting on about. :-X
Everything is better with lizardmen.

Even at the later stages of the game I always packed an autocannon with incendiary rounds just to illuminate the area really quickly for night terror missions.

Cool idea! I wasted at least 3 years of my life playing X-Com games. Can't wait to see more!!!

Those don't last as long as flares though. What I hate however, is when all the civvies spawn in the terror mission alongside all the chrysalids >:(. Nothing says "huggy-time!" like a swarm of zombies.

Surely not wasted?!
