Prussian Krupp 6pdr?
« on: December 30, 2009, 09:22:35 AM »

I've recieved artillery for my 15mm and I have question about exact colours of Krupp 6pdr breech loading cannon. Is there are any colour pictures of this gun?  I've found only 1 pic, but its a toy!

I think there was already a topic about colours of artillery carriages, You might want to use the search tool

I think it was something of a blueish medium grey

That was mine topic :) And there was question about colour of different countries guns.

Here I just want to find realictic colour pic of Krupp 6pdr, to have a look what colours was different parts of gun. I know that barrel should be black and limber with carriage blue. But how many metal parts had this gun? Was they black or blue?

I am particulary wandering about colour of that 2 diagonal long stick at bouth sides of carriage and also colour of two shelves at the front of carriage.

OK, I don't think You will find colour photographs, only graphic prints and these were made for instruction and not by specialists - so I would go with common sense:
everything of wood is bound to be painted in the same colour, and everything of iron would be blackened, since there wasn't anything else to prevent corrosion of steel - ferric oxide
on campaign the black layer would get worn off, so a bit of silvery/metallic should be OK, and very little rust
as soon as the piece would look too weathered, it would be repainted black - military tends to maintain their stuff in very good shape

some parts could be of brass, especially moving ones - brass is still best and cheapest material when it comes to that
check the naval battle sequences of the Kolchak movie for this - gives a very good impression

this is my approach

as to Your pictures, I would go for black with the parts You mentioned, as well as the axle
the wheels are not detailed enough, so I would use black for the hub and greyish silver for the tires, maybe a bit rusted
brass for the small parts on the breech
the model is not very detailed, so no need to spend too much time on it

Actially its black paint, with semi gloss finish. I've made a photo near yellow lamp, so colours are wrong :)

Nice and clean paintjob. Especially on that Prussian. Keep it up!   8)

As for the gun barrels, I would have painted them in flat black first. Then I would have taken some graphite powder for a gentle dusting. The effect is quite nice.
TANK POLO? God, how our gardener hated that game!
