Ok, as promised a step by step guide to the building of the governor's palace.

This will comprise the largest of my buildings for San Antonio De Bejar and will represent the home of the governor from Spanish times, through Mexican then into Texian independence. It will incorporate a small barracks, stable block, four separate balconies and many doors and windows.

Here is an overview of the basic model assembled so far, glued and pinned.

There are still some retaining walls to be added to the rear, but these will not be done until the model is glued onto the base board. That will happen after all the doors, windows and balconies have been added.

Here you can see I have started to add the door frames and window frames.

A close up of a basic plank door.

Here I am starting on the more ornate door of the entrance to the offices. This door will be representative of the panelled Spanish style doors that appear on more affluent houses and churches.

A close up of the finished door assembled and fitted.

And finally a progress shot so far. Adding the wooden detailing is probably the longest and hardest part. But its also the most rewarding as the buildings really start to take shape as these bits are added.

The large opening on the left will be a balcony that wraps aroound the side and joins another opening on the left hand side.

Right, I'm off for lunch and then back to work this afternoon before going out tonight to see in the new year :)

Thanks for sharing, I will enjoy following this.  A question tho, regarding the earlier stages of the build.  Do you work from a photo, a sketch, a plan, or is the basic structure 'simply'* imagined and built?

*Tho, of course, there is nothing simple about it!

Another lovely piece, and quite a size too! You'll have to get Bago round to take care of the sanding duties when its plastered, don't want to damage your own lungs!  lol

Wonderful. As is known, I love WIPs. And especially this one from the master of adobe architecture ...

He can do his own sanding thank you! I did some (about 30 seconds worth) on one of the previous buildings and thats his lot. Besides my lungs are f**ked enough anyway from all the smoking ::)

All of the above :D

I usually get my inspiration to start from a photo, either a movie or a book. In the case of all the adobe buildings so far they have been heavily influenced by the recent Alamo movie which had a wonderful set for San Antonio De Bejar.
I used lots of stills as reference material.
Then I draw a basic sketch of what I want to make. Then draw the outline onto the base board to see if it will fit ok and work as a model when viewed from all sides.
Then I build it. Normally things get changed and slightly modified as I progress.

Looks Really good so far and will be stunning when finished!! That fancy door really impresses me though, just the thought of getting all those small pieces of wood glued in the right places gives me nightmares!!

Splendido! Just in time for me to tranfer any of the profits from my own stuff straight into the bank of Malamute.
