Did anyone see.....?

Hi,

The other night on BBC4 (OK, if you live outside the UK then I guess you wouldn't have seen it) there was the second part of a tv series "The Edwardians in Colour."

I guess the other parts will be worth a watch - but you've already missed the best one.....full colour stills plus b & W movie footage from Mongolia in 1913........absoloutely fascinating stuff.

Most of the footage and photos seem to have been taken in and around Ulambatar....and just show general street life....not much of a military nature. Although in one sequence of film, which just showed people crossing a bridge, there was a shot of a Russian soldier complete with peaked cap, greatcoat, rifle and fixed bayonet.

The colour plates were mainly of women.....including noble women with their rather bizarre headdresses.

What was disappointing however, was that the sequence on Mongolia took less than 10 minutes out of a programme that ran for the best part of an hour.

All the film and photos used in the series come from the collection of a guy called Albert Kahn who sent photographers and filmakers across the world from the 1900's to around 1930.

For anyone in the UK this series is well worth a look and with luck you may catch a repeat of this week's edition. If you check out the Edwardians in Colour section of the main BBC website you will find 10 colour stills from the collection..but unfortunately these are all from either London or Ireland.......not Mongolia.

Squint.

This seems to prove, again, that the UK has the best television in the world.
