Abandoned Russian Grain Elevator
« on: January 03, 2010, 06:21:26 PM »
I get my ideas from all over the place > http://community.livejournal.com/abandonedplaces/1980882.html

BIG HO Building, most of the rubble from SGTS' MESS rubble pack, green tires from a PST Zil kit. Basecoated in grey now so I can start washing it straight away after painting the roofs and groundwork (going for faded grey wood)

Those are 2 Russian 20mm paratroopers in front so you get an idea. If you ignore the door in the small shack it could easily pass for 28mm, if you don't mind the smallish windows that is.

Who makes that building?

One miniature is too many, and a thousand are not enough...

No idea, I could not find a namestamp anywhere inside the building or on the base (which is highly unusual)

<edit: 5 mins of Googling later>

Thanks so much for that. I was looking for a bit, but you beat me to it. I thought this might be a good scale for This Quar's War, and the comparison picture sold me. Thanks!

Looks like one of the two next to the railway here in town. Don't forget the flaking paint and moss growing on the roofs. :)

That reminds me; filling up the big bags is no fun. The dust that comes out with the grain is so fine that it goes right through your clothing. Far worse than novelty itching powder, I must say. :(

Nice find!

Oh, and I've forgotten, once again, what HO scale is. 28mm scale-appropriate I hope?

HO is a track gauge rather than a scale. The actual scale of associated models can vary. British OO gauge is the same sized track as HO, but the scale of the models are different. Airfix used to sell toy soldiers described as HO/OO scale, and they were more like 20mm or 1/72ish.

Ah, so what then would you assume to be close to 28mm scale? Every time I think about PlasticVille buildings and railroad stuff I never can remember.

I'm not sure. OO Gauge is king here in Blighty, and I haven't ever really had dealings with anything else. I have heard that S Gauge is the best fit for 28mm, but I personally have no experience of it, so don't take my word for it.

Yes, I know the difference between gauge and scale. My reference to scale was to how the miniatures looked against the model itself, as the minis in TQW are shorter by design, and fit in between some common scales. Or gauges.

for those who don't know

0 gauge is scaled between 1/45 and 1/48, S gauge around 1/64, so it is the decision is how big You want Your scenery to be - model railway stuff is hardly ever "true scale"
younger HO scenery kits fit with 28 mm, older ones can be even to small for 20mm
