Am I right in thinking in those photos Plynkes posted, it is only the females of the tribe that get this done?

I think with the Mangbetu it was both (possibly high status) males and females that had this done. It's just that in photos (and statuary) it always seems to be the women that are shown. Also the fact that the men almost always wear hats makes it hard to tell.

Not certain, but this fellow looks like he's had it done...

I wonder if they had a sort of beauty salon where they sit and chat and gossip while having their nails and heads done.

To take our minds off their funny-shaped heads and mutilated naughty bits I present...

The Mangbetu Philharmonic.

And the pride of their percussion section (actually I think the orchestra only consists of a percussion section)...

... this supercool monstrous Xylophone.

Somehow that picture isn't helping to take my mind off of mutilated genitals.  ;D

And obviously the cone-heads don't meet our collective western idea of beauty.

Certainly not those of us who associate them with police helmets.

Just for Hammers, some Mangbetu...

They appear to be saying "We've got your shithouse door and we're not giving it back."

That middle one looks more like "my shield has rivets so it proves I'm into VSF"

That one with the plain shield almost looks like he has a horned helmet.

Maybe they are early Kenyan Viking reenactors....

Hi,
This is my first post.

Found this image of two tribesmen which the foundry figures are based on. There was no info with the pic, so I could'nt tell you their tribes name or where in East Africa they lived.

Regards, Marc
