Atlantean Encounter
« on: January 15, 2010, 11:11:14 AM »
Scenario:

The American New Englan Mining Corp's survey team are returning to their Port Harrison base after their first successful survey of the local area. They have been tracked by forces belonging to the Caliph of Khosinda who's spies believe the column to be that of the Miscatonic University lead by Prof. Armitage Shanks.

Prof Shanks and his team have been identified as an obstacle to the Caliph's goals; the liberation of antiquities from the newly emerged Atlantis. An ambush would appear to be the ideal solution to the problem . . .

The Setup;

Bullshott's  6 x 4 table, one 4' edge was the coast, with the outskirts of Port Harrison on a corner of the opposite edge. A mix of palm groves, ruins, low hills and open terrain filled the space between.

The US Marines (2 rifle units, artillery, machine gun and iron man) occupied the Port. They were resting and could only react to gunfire or the appearance of hostile forces.
The expedition of three steam powered walkers with native crews and european surveyors started on the coast diagonally opposite Port Harrison.
The Caliph's forces all started off table with the exception of one unit who followed on behind the column. They then appeared one unit per turn at one of 6 random locations on the table edge (4 on the coast and two on the long edge furthest from the port).

Gaslight rules were used with a few house modifications.

The Game

The New England Survey Team aboard their conveyances set off at sunrise toward Port Harrison (all models scratch built)

They are unaware of the Caliph's men watching them from the foothills

The first part of their journey is uneventful, the ladies of the expedition take time out to enjoy the ride

and other members take the opportunity for some game shooting

As the sun starts to set and column approaches some ancient ruins, Port Harrison comes into view in the distance

And then the ambush is sprung - automatons from the Caliph's workshop are sent by their controller Mustaph Ham-Ar to attack the walker at the rear of the column

Musket armed askari's close in on the ruins to take up position

and a unit of Badmashes break cover to open fire on the walker

The Badmashes' volley has a devastating affect on the walker, killing all of the occupants apart from one native driver

Fearing for his life, the driver heads for the safety of Port Harrison leaving the Badmashes and automatons in the distance

Seeing what is going on, and worried for the lives of his female colleagues, the epedition leader orders the driver of the steam carriage to head for Port Harrison 'at full steam'

Unfortunatley the carriage was unable to outrun the persuing automatons

The Marines were now active and firing on the Caliph's forces from the rooftops of Port Harrison

as the carriage approaches the safety of the Port, the automatons struck a critical blow causing the gearbox to jam in reverse

The Khosindan artillery, who up to this point had done nothing except drag their gun around, set up in anticipation of a shot at the steam carriage

more fire from the askaris and badmashes took it's toll on the passengers of the steam carriage which, having reversed out of the covering fire of the marines, was stormed by the askaris

Believing they had captured Prof. Shanks, and having killed all other members of the column, the Caliph's men withdrew with the stolen steam carriage back to their secret location.

All in all a very enjoyable game!

I love your contraptions. They really do have a sort of "Wallace and Gromit" vibe to them. And that is a good thing.

Wonderful, I'm very envious of your steam wagons. My dastardly French flying column could do with something of their ilk.  :-*

EExcellent story-tellling chaps, lovely minis, great scenery, fantastic contraptions - applause all round! This really is setting a standard in battle reports, I think it's all really impressive.

Do I recognise the legs from a Space Crusade Chaos Dreadnaught propping up the rearward steam-howdah?

I believe so. Bullshott is responsible for the two larger vehicles so he'd have to confirm.

The Steam Ambulator (or steam trousers) were made by me, using the legs from a mage knight figure with the superstructure being scratch built from plastic tubing, washers and green stuff.

In a recent development, it appears that the Americans shot down a small flyer belonging to the Caliph's forces en route to Khosinda.
