Fishman Demagogue...
« on: June 17, 2010, 05:58:55 PM »
So, just add this to the bottom of the Fishman entry on page 33 of the S.A. Rulebook and you now have a new(ish) Lurker for use in Strange Aeons and Von Unaussprechlichen Kulten! The value is maddening!!!  ;D

Demagogue (+6BP): Leader of a cult or simply a feared and powerful prince of evil. A Demagogue has the same stats, skills and equipment as a Fishman, but gains the Command and Speak Languages skills. In addition the Fishman Demagogue begins the game with 1 spell, rolled randomly from the Evil Spell Table. Also, additional spells may be purchased randomly from the Evil Spell Table for +3BP (Build Points) each.

Really, +6BP?

Don't get me wrong, this is AWESOME, but this makes a Fishman Demagogue with 3 spells 18bp, I'm just comparing that to a High Priest at 15bp and... other then for flavour, why would I want to take the FishDem instead of the High Priest?

The only bonuses the FishDem has is one higher Con and Surefooted, which I can give to my High Priest with 2 skills, making him 17bp with two more Wounds, one more Attack and one better Res.

I guess the FishDem does have hideous, thats pretty useful.

Cool! The Brigade Games Hybrid Priest is excellent to use as this model. Nice one Mike.

PushStudios,

The higher cost is indicative of the 'bigness' of the model. A regular Fishman is already a close combat ripper and the ability to cast spells and Command on top of that is crazy!

Mal,

I keep looking at that pack of figures... :-*

Excellent idea! Consider the idea "borrowed"

I think the other thing about Points is that it reflects how rare the item is as well.  Not just its ability to turn you into small bits of flesh and bone.

IMO that almost always ends up in units that are not cost effective. If you need rarity in a game then its best to use some other system to reflect it and not just the point cost.

Have to agree here, this only really ever works in campaign games, not in a tabletop skirmish.  If you include extra points based on rarity and not effectiveness they end up not being used at all in favour of other, more point efficient, things.

Why would you take a less effective Lurker unit when playing a game against a Threshold player? You have no reason so since there are no campaign benefits for Lurkers in the game and it gives the Threshold player an easier game.

Agreed...I think. Lurkers are meant to be played hard. Get out there and injure Threshold players so that the game is harder for them!

Humans always seek to maximize their available options.

(The good news is, most gamers don't take this to the extremes. It's just the few that do that stand out.)
