Hot glue solvent?
« on: January 24, 2010, 11:04:35 AM »
I always glue my miniatures to a plastic wine cork with hot glue, like so...

..to get a good hold when I paint them. The bond between cork and base has always been firm enough to last for a certain amount of manhandling and soft enough for a stout blade to part when the mini is done. However, I got a new bag of what I thought was generic glue sticks some time ago and the bond these create are just a bastard to cut apart. With the amount of force I need to apply I am bound to ruin a miniature some day.

Does anyone know of a way to dissolve hot glue bar using heat, which obviously would ruin the paint job to?

I can't answer your question but I do do something similar with bostik.  A small dab provides a strong bond which will part with a knife.  The residue then scrapes away (and if necessary, the tiniest of remnants can be lifted with careful application of nail varnish remover).

Try propanone

It reacts with a lot of different polys and your hot glue may well be made from one of them

EDIT: I believe it's aceton in Swedish vardagsnamn

I use white tack - more civilised than blue. Mock me too but I never have to ask how to get the glue off mine :D

Old skool blu-tak for me too.

But if you really want to mock, sometimes I just hold the figures ... by the base:o
