Bring on the Volcano!
« on: January 27, 2010, 12:10:07 AM »
Ok, did a lot of grunt stack and glue, then got out the soldering iron and had at the stack of styrofoam!

Sacrafical alter going to be on the top, lava tubes punched into the side of the slope, switch back trail going up.

Wonder what Im forgetting to throw in?

I'm sorry if I didn't catch it in the other entries in the project, but will the "terraced slope" ;) be the outside of the volcano or the inside slope of the crater? I assume the former, but given that you also did some lava pieces previously I'm not so sure.

Looking very good, although I can't quite fit it together in my mind. Really looking forward to a completed assembly of the table. :)

I think you hit the highlights for a volcano board. I like how you aligned the layers straight across the tile. My volcano attempt was a quarter circle in the same area and I retained the cake tier effect for four levels. The quarter circle shape reduced the playable area considerably.

For what it's worth I developed a construction technique/option. It used a cardboard frame/side supports, balled up newspaper filler and expanding foam in the cake tier gaps. Carved away excess foam after it fully expanded and dried then painted the entire thing with a brown paint with crushed granite suspended in it.

I use a soldering iron in this manner too. Another good one is a hot air gun if you have one - you can texture or remove depending on the distance you hold it away. Always wear a mask in a VERY ventilated area though as it is very toxic.
