GW, 40k and scratch building ork vehicles
« on: January 30, 2010, 06:59:46 PM »
So,

After selling almost all my GW lead and having not picked up a 40k model in anger in over 12 years. a friend of mine who's son is now into 40k has got himself a new army, and as yet only one opponent.

Being to weak to resist and looking for something different to my cthulhu collection, I am going to start a space Ork army. To keep it interesting and affordable to me I plan to scratch build all of my initial vehicles, and here is my question...

Wheels, has any one got any tips for good found materials or cheap materials to use for wheels. or tips for making good wheels.

I thought old lego might be good or fizzy pop bottle lids, but any tips would be appreciated.

Saving the last bullet... just in case.

See my wonderful BLOG of stuff!

Drop me a PM, I might be able to do something for you ;)

Otherwise, I think Ramshackle should be your first stop. Many of the vehicle bits just scream 'Orc conversion'.

Not worth getting angry about anymore. I think they have stepped up their game considerably in the past few years.

I get more annoyed with Wargames Foundry and Flames Of War to be fair.

Black Cat Bases do wheels;

Lego is also a good Idea. A well stocked Lego Box is often all you need when it comes to Ork trukks and the like.
I told you so. You damned fools.

Far be it from me to point anyone away from the LAF, but they do tons of mad orky scratchbuilding over at The Waaagh forum. Over there plasticard isn't a hobby material, it's a basic necessity of life.

Just as long as you come back and show us all what you're doin', too. ;)

This.

All sorts of guns and odd mechanical bits can be swooped up for a pittance. This was something I made years and years ago, from all sorts of bits and pieces out of the bits box.

It had different weapon options and everything, and could genuinely hold 20 Orks in the back. Ah, that was ace, I was kind of sad to let it go.

This. The Waaagh Forum is all over this kinda thing like ants on a dead lizard. If anyone can show you how it's done, they can.

Before I got out of it, I used cheap car wheels.  Find a dollar or pound store and buy cars and construction vehicles.  Make sure the wheels have the fake rubber on them.  You can pull this off to use the wheels in tank treads.  You can also use the wheels on their own.  My two cents.
