Sci-fi subterranean terrain
« on: February 03, 2010, 08:49:00 AM »
Well after feeling quite chuffed with my first set of terrain, I've started work on my second set. I'd love to use pink/blue extruded polystrene, but unfortunately not only is it unavailable here in Denmark, they also have no idea what it is. I'd considered getting ym parents to send some over to me, but for its bulk it'd probably cost an arm and a leg.
What follows is the beginnings of my 'sci-fi dungeon crawl' board, I'm thinking of painting it up in the same style as the first board (desert/adobe buildings), and hope to try and a capture Jabba's palace type feeling to it.
It's built in a modular style, with main squares each 300mm square with two entrances at each side. I'll be making some covers to cover unused doors later. In addition to these are some externally rooms and corridors to link it all together. I decided against putting walls on the corridors otherwise they'd end up being too high and narrow and thereofre difficult to place minis in.
The first main square:

Then another main square as a landing pad (well you've got to get the Alien SWAT team to the place right?):

Then a couple of images showing a couple of possible layouts with all the pieces completed so far:

Hope you like it!

That'd work nicely as it is as an XCom base. Now you need some grey aliens with mental powers to invade it!

Thanks it was somehting of the Xcom type base I was after. Detailing it seems to be taking forever, and I've just struck somehting, I stupidly didn't think of before - how to texture the floors so it doesn't look like polystrene? Normally I've glued sand down, but I don't think that will look right - any ideas?

Get some wall filler, spread it around.
I suppose, if you were patient enough, you could put down some wire meshing and then strips of card or plasticard as panels...

Depends if you want an earthy feel or a metal feel.

I had been thinking that it should be more earthy, but with a good technological type feel. My greatest inspiration has been jabba's palace, I'm likely to get some work done on it this weekend so let's see what I manage.

great stuff... given me an idea with some stuff I've had kicking about... how far on each side are your doors (and how wide are the doorways)?

Thanks guys. i've managed to get the first layer of paint on, so now they're all a nice sandy-orange colour, the floors need more work to cover up the polystrene texture - I really ish I'd thought of that before I started construction!
Anevilgiraffe - the doors are 7.5 cm from each edge and the doors are 5cm wide. so 7.5cm wall followed by 5cm door, then 5cm wall, then 5cm door and finally 7.5cm wall. Though remember to move all the measurements the thickness of the walls to one side as if you lap the walls over each other or all the doors will get shuffled the thickness of the wall to one side, I only remembered this when I started glueing it together and then had togo back and modify it again with the result that some of the doors aren't exactly where they should be, but I guess no one but myself will be irritated by it. (I hope that makes sense).
Once I got the floors fully textured I'll put more pictures up.

Might be a bit late, but what if you paste some wall filler on the floors like  Rob Alderman suggested, and then paint it in a blue-grey or something so it looks like concrete with gritted paint on?

I've seen it painted at my old school on the slippery concrete outdoors, and it was going to be the fudge I used to add a bit of colour to my underground German WWII facility (though I could just add some piping to the walls and/ or the obligatory red stripe across the lower half of the wall). You could have the occasional metal panel for maintenance on some sort of piping underneath to spice up the texture a bit. Treadplate plasticard is a bit pricy, but it's nice in moderation.

Your right it does have that feel. "X-Com" now that brings back memories of a lot of fun hours on the computer.
