Operation: Fallen Reich (Role Play)
« on: February 09, 2010, 09:10:18 AM »
Our forum is not really about role play but knowing that there are many LAFers with a cross interest I thought I'd draw attention to this fairly new game which caught my attention in the SF Bookstore in Stockholm (big store, worth a visit):

http://www.fallen.se/main/

It is a a game developed in Sweden but is all English, both language and setting. Gorgeous layout and apparently fast play.

Also, the webpage plot generator is not without use for creating a wargames scenario.

Hey, I spotted a really good scenario generator on there...  ;)

I am going to use that, it's got a lot of WWWII, Pulp and even CoC potential.

It is intriguing - I like the handy 'Wars British Chaps might have been involved in' section, useful for fleshing out those COC characters certainly. I love the way it's done, I'm reminded of a satire on disaster reporting from many years ago that said something like "...11,000 people are thought to have died, but none were British so that's all right..."

I was tempted to buy it just because it has been so nicely ADed. Art Deco inspired, I suppose, but in a modest, pleasing way.

The whole look seems appropriate to the period, not just the "stencils and insignia" look of most WW2 games.

This classic piece of late 30s/early 40s British design was obviously an inspiration:

Nicely done, indeed. Tempting, too...

Update to add: Did I call that one, or not? The publishers name-check the Keep Calm poster in one of their blogpostslol

The publisher is Swedish and even more puppishly anglo-sentimental than I (and most Englishmen I know)am. It is however possible to order through their website.

The double package is 649 SEK = £57 = €64

or roughly €33 = £30 = 340 SEK per 'book'.

I should add that I have no affiliation with this publisher, I am just a little proud that Mother Svea nurses a few game design talents at her bosom.

I don't see why they would not.

I'll have to add that to my list then.  I've got Gear Kreig, Adventure! and Hollow Earth Expedition.  Looks like another worthy for my Pulp/Weird WW2 rpg collection.   :D

I don't see why they would not.

When I tried out the paypal link it was all in Sweedish.   lol

I was wondering because they do not mention it on their site...

I'm sure if you email them they'll ship it to the US.  I'm going to give it a go in a Month or two when funds are avalible.  Using a currency converter it looks like the Core book with the other book will be around $80-$90 usd.  The Core book by itself is around $50 usd.

I got this response from them this morning...
 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sir,

Nice to hear from you. OFR is an excellent game for conventions as the rules
are extremely fast and easy, using 1D20. Last year we had a tournament with
40 teams during the Gothcon convention. We had also had much appreciated
demonstrations of The Life Board (for creating characters) on several
conventions and hundreds of characters have been made on it.
We have two (soon three readymade convention adventures) but they are
unfortunately in Swedish. But we will release a free English scenario on our
website within a week. It is called “Tennis, terror and tricky birds” and
could be played during an evening if speed is kept up. If you rather make
your own adventure we recommend our scenario generator on www.fallen.se

All the rules are in English and the rulebook also includes another scenario
"The Oldest Killer" that can be played in a few hours if the game master
makes a few shortcuts. The game has focus on playing your characters
personality and most of all having a good time. Rules are simple, quick and
made to give a good flow. Each player has a two or more characters and
chooses one before then scenario starts, if it gets badly hurt or otherwise
fall out of the game a replacement can quickly be thrown in. The game have a
rather high mortality rate.

The Life Board is used for generating characters using 1D6 and cards.
Besides the large board it includes 100 unique start cards and 200 unique
destiny cards. Moving a marker around you gain skills and experience until
20 cards are drawn and the character is finished. You then have a character
made of both luck and your own choices and also a complete history as things
on the board happens in more or less chronological order.

We have so far just one solid review (in Swedish but you can see that the
grades are very good)
http://www.speltidningen.se/recensioner/gamedetail.asp?g=628&t=2
But more are on the way and the game has been very, very well received.
If you like to buy the game you can just make an order on the webpage (about
90-95 $ for both Rules and the Life Board with shipping). As we have no
distribution in the States yet we offer shipping and handling at the same
rates were ever in the world you are. It can also be brought from several
Swedish web shops.

It looks like an order I will have to do soon....
