Wuttemberg 1914
« on: February 24, 2010, 09:22:31 PM »
Hey folks, I am putting together a force of Wuttemberg troops for the early war years 1914-1915.  I know they were in the XIII Corps but that is about it.  Does anyone have any information as to what regiments (Cav/Inf Jagers etc.) from Wuttmberg were used in August 1914.  One source said that up to 4% of the Imperial Army were from Wuttembeg.  Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Erwin Rommel was in the 124th Infantry (6th Württemberger). In August 1914 they were involved in the advance towards Verdun.

Sorry, that's all I've got (I happened to have his book to hand and that's about all the detail he gives of his unit, being more concerned with the doings of his platoon rather than any higher organisation).

My great-grandfather served in the 8. Württembergische Infanterie-Regiment Nr.126. I've got an interesting book about the exploits of this regiment in WWI, written in 1929.
In August 1914, they were part of the XV Corps. They spent most of the August fighting in the Upper Alsace and Lorraine. If you need informations beyond this, maybe I can help you.

Thank you all for your responses.  I have found a very interesting web site that has a wealth of material on the entire Imperial Army from the 1870's through WWI. It is in German but the photos and color cards are easy to understand. Here are in order info on the XII Corps Wurttemberg, various regiments and the 10th Reserve Regiment nr. 180.

Trencher-I couldn't find info on the 8 - nr.126 and would be very interested any information you could share-thanks

Thanks Trencher, the history and photo are just what I need.  Infanterie-Regiment Nr.126 Großherzog Friedrich von Baden (8. Württembergisches) is exactly the type of unit I wanted to build!

Mind you, that by mid-1915 most of the prominent spikes of the Pickelhauben had been removed. And their uniforms look a bit more shaggy than they were at the "Ausmarsch" in August 1914. But that was Flanders...
I'll try to get some pics up (from the book) that evening.

My idea is to make the units as they might have been in the first months of the war- light field works, limited wire entanglements etc.  Young warriors ready to do their duty for God and fatherland before the horrors of Western Front trenches. So the more early war pictures I can fnd the better.
